Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

Cedar Key is still “Old Florida,” probably one the last places like that in the whole state, imo. We spent 3 nights there in March, 2021, and said then if we ever got the chance, would go again. Very slow pace there, not at all like Sanibel and Key West, which we also visited on that same trip.

Very pleased to report Joe Brower has checked in. He and his family are safe. Internet and cell phone service have been difficult, as well as cleanup of multiple big trees.

Welcome back, Joe!

Good to hear! “Old Florida” is a special place, not easily found these days.

Hope things are getting back to (somewhat) normal for you and yours, FRiend! :-)

Our friends in Venice (who we didn't hear from in quite awhile) still have no electricity. They said their house was "battered" by Ian, but the main issues are 2 holes in the roof (one over the garage). They've been busy trying to contact their roofing company and dealing with insurance claims, etc. There are downed trees all over their neighborhood.

As far as I know, they are fortunately NOT in the part of Venice where the Myakka River rose up to flood entire neighborhoods.

So much damage, so widespread. Sickened by the massive flooding in and around Arcadia FL. The highways and streets are crumbling. Only access into the quaint old Florida town is by boat at this point.

A long queue of cars lined up today when a rumor spread that Chik-Fil-A was bringing their food bus to Arcadia. Alas, it was just a rumor. So sad.

I have filled five trash cans with debris from the bottom of the pool. More to go.

Ok. You’re worrying me. Made more cookies than you could eat? Although...I can see it. After a few days you just a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich!

Relieved to know the body count was unremarkable.

This year I’ve been experimenting with cucurmin instead of NSAIDs. I found a winner- at least for me. It’s called Meriva- developed and sold by Thorne. I have wicked arthritis in my spine and one hip. This stuff knocks the pain out. Thorne developed this to be absorbable- and it seems to be. It’s been a miracle for me. Comes in time-release or regular. Not cheap.

Thanks for the turmeric tip! Question: will it make me smell like a pot of chicken curry? I tend to keep curcumin dosage below 750mg to avoid the parfum effect.

My sister in St Pete says grocery shelves are pretty bare there, but that the managers are saying things were being sent to Ft. Myers as a priority, and that they should be getting trucks in later this week there.

Made me realize AGAIN, how very blessed I am. I am going to see about making donations to charities that might be able to help out with food. My other sister’s parish in Gainesville is diverting their food pantry outreach to Cape Coral. Things should be getting to the area soon, with more to come over the next few weeks/ months. Long road ahead.

Apparently, the road into Pine Island is about to open. Here’s the facebook page that seems up to date.

Pine Island could be accessible as early as Wednesday evening.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said work on Pine Island Road was earning completion on Wednesday afternoon.

“Emergency vehicles are going to start going across in about an hour,” DeSantis said during a press conference on Matlacha. “Later today, the public will be able o access this bridge and be able to get back … Be patient as they work through these last little kinks.”

DeSantis said Publix boated employees to its store on the Island to get ahead on Wednesday morning. There is also trucks waiting to cross the bridge to restock the supermarket.

“We wanted it to be done by the end of this week, and they got it done by the middle of this week,” DeSantis said.
