Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

Thanks Metmom and Nutmeg....

Truthfully I just hunt for them. ...sometimes I just come across interesting shots like that one. I didn't know there was such a thing as a circular rainbow. This one was seen as Hurricane Ivan was approcahing so I thought perhaps othrs hadn't known of this as well. I do enjoy looking for photos though. They so often tell a story far better than than the spin doctors!

Wafffle Houses are opening there and that’s where they’re getting fed last I heard. Also I expect to seee Smaraitans purse actively involved as they were on their way there early on.

Hoping people continue to be very patient as they're not yet a week out from the Hurricane yet. Undeniable most are doing everything they can to get to people. It's stunning how quickly they have so many roads unblocked. Power is going to take some time no doubt in the worst areas.

I'm impressed how this has been handled including the people helping each other.

My daughter lives in Charlotte. She said some chairs were blown around in her backyard. That’s all.

The I-75 closure in Sarasota County between Exits 193 and 179 has concluded; all lanes of the Interstate have reopened as of 4:00 PM.

The piece I read was that the entire west coast of Florida had potential jeopardy costs of 42 trillion if you can fathom that! I see where Brandon is trying to come up with one and a half trillion.Dems never let a tradegy pass without politicizing it.

I have been to a lot of those places during my travels and some are waaaay off I 75 with marginal road systems....This storm will take years to repair the damage. We just got over one that hit three years ago and we are storm ready down here we get them all the time. The West Coast will have to be basically rebuilt. Better hope the “right” people are in charge when all that takes place.

Very thankful DeSantis is in charge of FL during this disaster.

The death toll is up to 44 this morning, with reports of people still missing.

Schools remain closed Monday from the Tampa Bay area south, due to lack of electricity and structural damage.

There is still a large swath within two blocks of my house who are without electricity this morning. I'm providing battery backup and charging for neighbors. Lots of cookouts nearby as the neighbors have cleared out their freezers.

I am donating my hurricane supplies to the cause for those who have lost so much. It is the right thing to do for those of us most fortunate through this storm.

Photos do not accurately encompass the vast devastation.

The rivers flooding post-storm from astonishing rain amounts inland is something we’ve never seen before. Sure, the rivers have areas of anticipated local flooding. This is beyond memory.

Don’t know if the following has been posted:

1. Sanibel Island uninhabitable. They evacuated approximately 90 by boat. Public NOT allowed on island. No idea for how long. Lighthouse suffered damage. Still standing? Don’t know. bridges also gone to Pine Island

2. No one is allowed in Ft Myers Beach. Emergency crews continue search and rescue.

3. Deaths in Lee County now at 35.

4. Florida Power and Light hopes to have power back by Sunday Oct 9th. As of Oct 2 no power no water cell phone sporadic

5. I live in Jamaica Bay in Ft Myers. We believe a conservative estimate of homes lost in our park is 500. My home survived with moderate damage. Still some side streets not easily passable.

6. National Guard has set up relief stations near us with food and water. Some gas stations open. The problem is expending the gas you have just to get gas or water is difficult. Odd situation to be certain.

7. Those who would trivialize this or blame us for living in a hurricane zone are showing the world who they at heart are. Yes, we chose to live here. Others chose to live in Tornado alley or earthquake prone places. We took our chances like anyone else. A little human compassion and decency should rule the day, not heartless snide remarks. I write this because of some comments that were made online to my neighbor who lost her home and her belongings to Ian. This historic hurricane has changed our lives forever. The residents of our community are all over 55.

May God save us all

Learned very disturbing news this morning. Dakin Dairy Farms in Myakka City is very heavily damaged with about 200 cattle killed. Surviving cattle are sick with pneumonia and other maladies due to the stress from the storm.

Dakin Farms is one of the last full service dairy farms in Florida. It my favorite place to visit when crossing the state, going to and from visiting my Mom. Dakin Farms is 18 miles due east of our evacuation location.

Owner Jerry Dakin called the storm a disaster unlike anything he had witnessed in his life. Owner Jerry Dakin said he isn't sure that rebuilding the longtime dairy farm is feasible.

There was some discussion on the various inter webs about FPL restoring a much larger portion of their customers than Lee County Electric Coop. But, one should take into consideration that LCEC’s service area includes the devastated islands, where they can’t even get line trucks to the areas of need, and as you noted, some of those islands are uninhabitable presently anyway.

I suspect that close to the shore, FPL is dealing with the same issues that LCEC is dealing with, and those areas will take much longer to restore than areas a bit farther inland, where most of the infrastructure is intact.

"I’m looking for a place to send some money that is feeding the first responders and the linemen."

The Salvation Army has sent canteen trucks to feed people in Fort Myers. I don't know how much goes to first responders vs residents. I'm with you not trusting many of the big charities, but the Salvation Army keeps its admin costs really low and has a long history of disaster assistance on a global level.

Our family has long supported them. When my parents arrived as refugees in New York Harbor on a cold November day in 1950, the Salvation Army was there with hot coffee to greet them. It was their first cup of coffee in America, delivered free of charge. My parents never forgot how they were welcomed to the new world where they were starting over with nothing.

Haven’t given to the salvation army since the racist leftist diatribe i had to sit through to volunteer to help with Katrina evacuees. Along the lines of being in Katrina was akin to being on a spaceship on the middle passage and whitey better bow to the darker skinned evacuees and not upset them. Walked out and never gave another dime to the salvation army. I give to Samaritans purse. Franklin Graham is u abashed and unwavering in his preaching of the Gospel

If Elon Musk can provide Starlink for Iran and Ukraine, why not SW Florida?

Governor DeSantis has been working with Musk. Elon is repositioning Starlink satellites. DeSantis said the company plans to send 120 "large Starlink units" to Florida, which will serve as satellite dishes to distribute internet connections to devices within a 13-mile radius.

Ugh. I’ve not run into that with SA, but the ‘contagion’ is getting harder to avoid. I like Samaritan’s Purse as well.
