Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

IIRC Katrina made landfall as a Cat 2 storm away from heavily populated areas. Ian made landfall as a high Cat 4 and in more populated area. I am praying for all people impacted by Ian.

This is a Katrina/Andrew level event. Slightly less, meteorologically, but ...some... steel reinforced concrete doesn’t care above 140 mph. Frame structures, no chance.

It looks like Fort Myers took a huge beating from the storm, with storm surges of over 10 feet. 🙁 Be very lucky this storm didn't make a direct beeline for the Tampa Bay region, since a large portion of that region is subject to inundation if the storm surge reaches 10 feet like it is now.

We still have power in Pass-A-Grille (knocks wood). The wind is picking up, however.

Just imagine if it hit Tampa Bay instead. Not only a much higher population, but a lot of Corporations located there as well.

Thanks for that. Kind of following I4 W to E. Hmm... that exit spot is pretty close to me. Maybe 25 miles south. But might not even be cat 1 then.

Nothing like what W coast FL going through. Not even close. They definitely got hit.

Pretty much the Surge area was Fort Myers down to Naples. To the North of the area the winds pushed water away from land.

Depends on... is the best answer.

Between the tracking speed, storm surge, sustained wind speeds, inches of rain falling per, land topography and its ability to shed/drain water, hurricane coverage (mass/size), etc., will - all - impact, the given land crossed, greater than, or lesser than, other comparable storms.

IMHO- This storm checks off most of the boxes in a very negative way.

The preparedness and early warnings issued, along with the overwhelming ways implemented to convey said information in today’s society using all forms of media, likely saved many lives.

Slide...

An especially snarky reporter asked one of Gov. DeSantis spokespersons, how a particular responsible agency was dealing with the trauma that was being visited upon the elderly, that were having to be relocated from their long-term living facilities into alternative survivable shelters. Good grief! How about the trauma of leaving the elderly in the buildings as they fill up with contaminated ocean water?

I appreciate and accept your apology. It’s not an easy thing to do. I unfailingly hope the best, pray for you in California through fires and earthquakes because no matter the cause, it’s a hell of a thing to feel powerless when nature gets rowdy.

This is so tragic! I am at work, so grateful for this thread because I can’t get to a TV for news. Praying for all in the path of this monster.

By the time this storm passes inland, there may not be much of Fort Myers left standing intact. 🙁 Now you wonder will it start to resemble the 1900 Galveston hurricane but in a less populate area.

Wind was blowing from east and north in Venice, blowing the water out to sea. Same here in Pinellas County except more northerly winds.

This is pretty much the worst-case scenario for Fort Myers.

I’m not looking forward to the pictures from Naples and Ft Meyers (Beach). The vidya I’ve already seen looks like a tsunami.
