Russia will use its largest and most-powerful nukes to defend the territory it occupies in Ukraine, a staunch ally of Vladimir Putin has insisted today.
Dmitry Medvedev, who served as a stand-in for Putin from 2008 to 2012, vowed the territories will become part of Russia when referendums are held this week - after which 'any Russian weapons' will be used to defend them.
That includes 'strategic nuclear weapons' such as Putin's giant new Sarmat missile, Medvedev said, and 'weapons based on new principles' - likely a reference to hypersonic technology that the Kremlin claims is invulnerable to air defences.

This is insanity. The use of a nuclear weapon now crosses the rubicon in terms of military escalation. If it happens, get out of any major metropolitan area now because the escalation to a strategic nuclear exchange will happen very quickly.

Let’s call their bluff. With NATO’s transportation network we could have every tank in Europe in the first two waves. This time, we’ll (NATO members) be smart in the Kursk offensive. Russia will never use nukes first. Reagan and Thatcher were pulling the same bluff in the 80’s in Germany. Just like the Kennedy bluff in Cuba. Who’s with me in putting our soldiers on transports today? We’ll show those Russians.

Once the occupied territories “vote” to join Russia, any assault on them by Ukraine will be considered an attack on the homeland. In turn, this will serve as a basis and justification to use nuclear weapons.

The use of tactical nukes in Ukraine will spread radiation to Russia. And the West would likely escalate in response.
The use of strategic nuclear weapons must certainly bring an exchange that will devastate Russia.
I’m sure many in Russia want Putin out before any of that can happen.
But there’s no guarantee of a coup.

Somebody help me out. My head hurts trying to think this through. How does somebody use a nuclear weapon to defend its territory? Where do you detonate it?
To: marcusmaximus
Oooooh! More nuke threats from another Russian blowhard in Moscow. Yawn.

This guy has gone from being a peaceful, cooperative President of Russia to a lunatic.

Earlier this year just prior to the invasion they practiced dispersal of their civilian and military leadership to the hardened bunkers in places like Yamantau and
Kosvinsky Kamen. They turned the transponders on, on the fleet of gov't planes used to ferry officials and generals to these places, so they could be openly tracked on flightradar.com. It was a form of signalling. I hope we learned a thing or two about their reaction times. We have to watch closely if they announce wider civilian dispersal drills, like evacuating major cities. This may be a form of cover for a first stike or escalation where tactical nukes are used against targets in Ukraine and staging areas across the border in Poland. If that happens, we may need to go all in and start taking out as many of their land-based strategic assets with everything we have. Defang the bear. And then issue an ultimatum for a standdown of their remaining forces (mostly boomers operating in the naval bastions in Barents and Okhots sea.) Or we all ride the handsome. Dangerous times.

Russia isn’t threatening its own territory, it is threatening to introduce to the world the normalizing of nuclear weapons in regular warfare, using nukes to subdue a nation that won’t submit to Russian invasion.

I wonder if they still have the Tsar bomb? At 100 megatons it makes the bomb dropped on Hiroshima look like a firecracker.
