Russia Seeks to Annex Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson into Russia
Net news ledger ^ | 20th September 2022

A move in occupied territories in Ukraine to hold ‘votes’ on joining Russia could be a sign of Vladimir Putin realizing that he has to do radical things to save face and be able to declare victory in what is increasingly seen as a failed war.

Votes being held in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson may indicate a move to annex these Ukraine territories into Russia.

These moves are generating speculation on potential escalation of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Sources tell NetNewsLedger that Russian President Putin is planning a major escalation including conscription. Over past weeks the Russians have conscripted convicts into the armed forces.

These moves come after a major successful advance by Ukraine troops.

What is possible however is that if Putin were to annex Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson into Russia, he would consider any attacks on those territories to be attacks on Russia and could led to a major escalation of the war.

So if Guam votes to go to Red China then you’re down with that.

these referendums are illegal, even by RF law, since they take place on contested territories during active fighting. From the international law point of view, holding elections in occupied areas will likely be considered a war crime, with a subsequent increase in sanctions on Russia and aid to Ukraine.

India will bear in mind the occupation of indian land by Pakistan and China and reject Russia.

China will fear Taiwan using this and turn on Putin.

Yes, of course, they are illegal.

And yet the remaining people in those regions are holding one.

Get the UN/NATO/US/UK/EU to send a strongly worded letter to Putin, kkthx.

How can that be since the Ukrainian military just took it all back by force? There is no leader strong enough(on either side )to make peace. So close to having one in Trump but they stole it.

East of the Rhine, boundaries have been fluid for centuries. In 1945, Stalin expelled most Germans from Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary, areas that were in medieval times Slavic or Magyar, but which Germans settled. Eastern Ukraine was added by the Soviets, despite a Russian majority, to balance off against Western Ukraine, which had been under Austrian rule, and before that, Polish rule. Krushchev added Crimea, originally Tatar but resettled by Russians under the Tsars, to Ukraine. The Soviets also resettled Russians into non-Russian areas of the USSR to dilute nationalist sentiments.

All these nationalist sentiments, whether Russian or Ukrainian, are based on population and border changes less than 100 years ago, for the most part. The Germans expelled from Pomerania, the Sudetenland, etc., had more right to their stolen lands by virtue of length of time. So do white Americans, Ulster Protestants, Germans in South Tyrol, etc.

Putin is trying to reestablish the Soviet Union and this is a land grab, no different from what Stalin did. That being said, Zelensky and Putin need to negotiate to end the fighting. The Ukrainians may be the good guys, but America needs to fortify our own poorly controlled border before going overseas looking for dragons to slay.

“If the people there want to join Russia, then it’s not a land grab..”

So you’d be okay with it if a few counties in Texas voted to leave the US and join Mexico?

“So you’d be okay with it if a few counties in Texas voted to leave the US and join Mexico?”

Here in Texas, they’re welcome to speak Spanish, but if we forced them to live under conditions similar to what Russian-speakers had to live under in Ukraine, then I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted to join Mexico.

As to whether I would be okay with it, my problem would be living in a state (or country) that treats their own citizens that way, I would be fighting that government.

Have you ever been to Ukraine? A certain Austrian corporal made the same claims about Sudetan back in 1938. I’m sure you would have swallowed his story, too.

It had nothing to do with German speakers. The Sudentenland was the main line of the Czechoslovak defense. Once Hitler got it, Prague was easy pickings, and eventually Hitler got it without firing a shot.

“It had nothing to do with German speakers.”

I’m aware of that. It was also where most of the Czech arms factories were located.

The city of Zaporizhzhia, population 750,000 , isn’t even occupied. Yet still Russia proposes to steal it via “referendum”? Ludicrous. A Potemkin country creates a Potemkin referendum. Russia is the laughing stock of the world.

We are now getting down to the nitty gritty where the Donetsk and Luhansk troops have been abandoned by the Russians who largely withdrew to lose in other places.

If those separatists continue to hold out they will be slaughtered. They had their 15 minutes and their chance to give up will soon be over and the slaughter by vastly superior arms will begin.

“if we forced them to live under conditions similar to what Russian-speakers had to live under in Ukraine...”

How were they “forced”? The Russian border was a few km away, they could just walk over there and be safe if it was so bad.
