Vladimir Putin appeared poised to go all-in on his war in Ukraine today, sparking fears of an escalation in fighting that could drag in NATO and spark World War Three.
In a day of rapid-fire developments, Kremlin stooges in Ukraine's Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions simultaneously announced referendums on becoming part of Russia between September 23 and 27, with the sham votes expected to easily pass.
Dmitry Medvedev, a staunch Putin ally, then vowed 'all forces of self-defence' will be used to protect what he called 'Russian territory' - teeing up a new phase in the conflict involving weapons and tactics the Kremlin has so-far held in reserve.
Underlining that point, Moscow's rubber-stamp parliament passed new laws paving the war for Putin to end his 'special military operation' and officially declare a war, allowing him to mobilise Russia's massive population into the army.
It comes after Ukraine humiliatingly routed Putin's forces to the east of Kharkiv and recaptured a swathe of territory, with the despot's allies, propagandists and political hardliners calling for an escalation amid calls for the president to resign.
Putin was said to be preparing an address to the nation tonight, Russia's national broadcaster reported, without giving any further details.

They hit an ammo dump.
I just heard on The Urban on rumble
Referendums to be held in Donetsk Luhansk Kherson and “zobrahjev”
No clue how to spell last
I just hear folks speak of it
These referendums are irreversible politically from Russian side
Western media will go crazy
Maybe or ignore it who can say
If actual Russian army does indeed take over
Western media won’t have to change a thing
I’ve yet to see any claim Russian allies are 90% not Russian regulars
Apparently, Putin has actually gone fishing.
Someone got the day of the TV appearance wrong. kekw
“Ah yes, technicalities. My bad.”
Not a technicality: You said “we,” and there is no way you can explain it away and have any credibility.
I said, my bad.
Want a tissue since you keep whining?
Dmitry Medvedev - the turd who promised Russia would not invade.
“Want a tissue since you keep whining?”
Not whining. Just exposing you for who and what you are.
Exposure is good, for all of us, dink.
Mirrors in your basement or what?
“Peace that should have been dealt with in 2014”
Agree, but 2014 was just used by the Neocons to get the Russians out of Ukraine, so that they could build up the Ukrainian military. The Neocons NEVER intended to carry through with the agreement, and that’s why Putin will not believe a thing the West says at this point.
Russia will achieve its goals in Ukraine, and then the fighting will be over. The only question for the Neocons is whether they’re going to start WW3 over it.
Feel free to mock my comment, if it pleases you.
You know, some people on FR aren’t much different than the liberal masses: They can know they’re backing the wrong side at great expense to the nation and would rather die, literally, than to admit their blunder.
It’s ironic
One of Kremlin talking points is the Kosovo legal machinations the west weaved as his justifications for Donbas change of sovereignty from one entity to another
That’s what I said back then, Kosovo set a horrible precedent.
Listen to this speech from August 2008.

Russia was so transparent even that long ago, Lech Kaczynski (Polish) had a good idea of their game plan.
“We know that today it is Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine, the day after it will be the Baltic states, and who’s to say my country of Poland won’t be next?”
Two out of three so far ain’t bad, but Russia’s already rattled the sabers at the Baltic.
Maybe he was pals with Zhirinovsky - who also seemed to have an uncanny ability to predict Russian invasions down to the exact date and time.
Russia chose this. They chose the date, the time, the nature of the invasion and the targets. But they were dumb enough to REPEATEDLY throw out signposts of their intentions.
What do you do when you know what the asshole is planning? As Myagi said: “Julie-san, fighting not good. But if must fight... win. “
Ukraine was expecting Russia to do this. Its first warning was in 2008. It had a big warning in 2014. Then it had Zhironovsky and Dugin practically giving them the launch date. So, Ukraine’s been montaging its way into tournament readiness for no reason other than the vatniks were dumb enough to keep telling them exactly what they were planning to do.
What was the Russian military command doing while Ukraine was tooling up? It spent eight years embezzling the money, skimping on vehicle maintenance and buying cheap retread tires from China so they could pocket the difference, letting missile silos rust up, saving a fortune on comms upgrades by sticking to unencrypted channels and 2g networks, and relying on deniable assets like Wagner and convicted fraudsters prancing about in designer army surplus to do all the ground work.
That’s why Russia did so very well in the first few months. It threw the kitchen sink into flattening Mariupol, butchering Bucha and capturing Kherson. And thought it was competent.
Rope-a-dope.
“One of Kremlin talking points is the Kosovo legal machinations the west weaved”
I remember when that happened. We had nothing to stand on, so we said: “Sure if a piece of a country wants to break off, then fine, they can break off”.
Needless to say that scared the crap out of many countries, but I guess we thought that we could make it ‘non-operative’ after Kosovo. Too bad, Russia was listening and taking notes.
Russia wants the coast.
All of it.
Including Odessa.
They ave asked to become part of Russia. I think you are a bit confused.
Those were paid mercenaries and volunteers. SMO was not allowed to use the real Russian military.
But this could change that.
They have more powerful friends than we do. BRICS, SCO, and we have the EU. Whoopie.
Countries are in line to help BRICS dedollarize the world.
Iran was just admitted to the SCO.
Biden is completely insane.
