CNN - Our four-legged friends don’t drive gas-guzzling SUVs or use energy-sucking appliances, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a climate impact. In fact, researchers have showed that pets play a significant role in the climate crisis.
But what do Barkley and Whiskers have to do with our warming planet? It’s the products we buy for them that need a closer look.
Their meat-heavy diet is the biggest contributor to their carbon pawprints, which requires an abundance of energy, land and water to produce. And the production of pet food emits huge amounts of planet-warming gases.
According to a 2017 study, feeding dogs and cats creates the equivalent of around 64 million tons of carbon dioxide in the US each year. That’s roughly the same impact as 13.6 million cars on the road. And, if our furry friends formed a separate country, it would rank 5th in global meat consumption behind China, the US, Brazil and Russia, according to UCLA professor and author of that study Gregory Okin.
But don’t panic. Bidding farewell to your best friends is not the answer.

Let me guess
Progs want us to eat them
for desert
after we finish our bowl of bugs.
The only climate change problem I see is all the CO2 emitted by these Greeniacs blathering about climate change. Do the planet a favor and off yourself and help save it.
Never heard that one before! Ya learn something new every day!
What if the cat is carbon neutral by reducing the number of free range CO2 sources? Oooo, look, kitty brought home a nousie to share.
California wildfires are the cause of climate crap.
CNN, all climate change con, all the time.
These people are loons-my 4 cats-who live indoors-gleefully chase, torture and kill any rodent, lizard or insect that manages to get indoors and will eat it if I don’t take it away, replacing it with a couple of favorite treats for a job well done-the article recommends a small rodent or a bird as a low carbon pet-my cats would consider a mouse/rat/parakeet an edible toy, as would just about any feline-talk about a waste of money...
We can decrease CO2 Emissions and cut down on global warming, by tying up cnn reporters tight, and putting thick duct tape over their mouths. Little talking, less CO2...little body movement, less heat and CO2.
A twofer.
My cats hate them, too. And also want some tuna.
I discussed this with my two dogs, Buddy Boy and his faithful sidekick “Killer”. Names are changed to protect their real identities. They have never tasted dog food, they eat several pounds of fresh cooked meat (pork and chicken mostly) each day. Buddy Boy suggested opening up the hunting season and bag limits so we can take advantage of the millions of deer that die each winter unharvested. His sidekick offered to sneak into liberal homes, snatch them in their sleep, and drag the bodies home for me to dress and cook. She is a firecracker that one, and also not a picky eater.
I gave our dog extra wet food. Only seemed right🤣🤣
Liberals have pets instead of children. The carbon savings alone are immense, apart from myriad other environmental benefits. I think we should make this mandatory for people on the left.
I’ve been stumped a few times lately. Thought for sure it was the🐝.
Sky Raisin lmao
I’m in favor of carbon dioxide.
As poorly as humans run this planet, who cares if it gets warmer?
Lets keep the pets and ditch the leftists.
Make Life Happy Again!
So why not catch all the Rats in NYC and turn them into cat food? Those rats poop on the sidewalk and every where else too.
What climate problem is the author referring to?
