Moscow’s forces began evacuating a major city in southern Ukraine and Kyiv’s shot down an Iranian-made Russian drone Tuesday, as Ukraine’s lightning counter-offensive continued.
Russian troops were seen fleeing from Melitopol, a city in the southern portion of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia province, exiled mayor Ivan Federov said on social media.
“The occupiers ran from Melitopol towards the temporarily occupied Crimea,” Federov said on the messaging app Telegram.
He added that “columns of military equipment” from Melitopol were seen passing through Chonhar, some 70 miles to the southwest and bordering Crimea.
“This was expected — the rapid Ukrainian offensive leaves them no chance,” Federov said.
The reports of retreating Russians came hours after multiple explosions were reported in Melitopol near the local airfield, where occupying troops had set up a makeshift base.

The Russians are still attacking north and east from what they used to hope was going to be the Donbas pocket. Their plan was to connect up to Izium and trap a portion of the Ukrainian army. Now that Izium is gone their reasoning is ?????
I guess their last orders were to attack and no one has yet told them that attack no longer makes any sense.
I wonder if Kazan is in the same situation. His boss told him to post propaganda on Free Republic supporting whatever the current line from Moscow happens to be and he will keep doing it no mater what.
I’m sure that shipping all their supplies by sea from the Baltic wouldn’t be that much of a strain to Russian logistics...

So far, the Ukrainian land navy has prevailed on the navy side of things.
Vlad knows he’s losing so he’s bumping off the generals and colonels who might be pissed that he got their forces so chewed up.
He’s covering his butt.

Quick question: given Russia won’t compromise on its earlier unconditional surrender terms to Ukraine, and is now targeting critical infrastructure, why is it ALSO pulling out of areas it held comfortably and was doing so to “protect” the Russian Ukrainian people?
One side of that action simply motivates the Ukrainians to fight back harder, while the other side motivates the AFU to liberate large areas.
Imported Russians are getting out of dodge, but the resident Russian Ukrainians aren’t part of the withdrawal/evacuation plan, and according to all prior Russian rhetoric this means they’re exposed to Ukrainian Nazi counterattack.
Maybe someone should tell the long term ethnic Russian civilians inside the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporizhia Oblasts that one possible reason Russia’s bugging out in this fashion is that their presence was never about “saving” them at all. Dead Khokols aren’t a PR problem as far as Russia is concerned, even if they are Russian Khokols.
Russia wants the land, the resources, the tangible assets. To get them, it needs Ukraine’s unconditional surrender. I think many in Russia’s growing opposition to Putin’s “too slow” approach would take a “rational” decision to use tactical nukes on large settlements in liberated separatist areas, taking out a massive chunk of the Uke army along with an unpredictable local population. Ukraine won’t want the Donbass back if it’s been nuked.
The Russian stove[1] (Russian: русская печь) is a type of masonry stove that first appeared in the 15th century.[2] It is used both for cooking and domestic heating in traditional Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian households.[3] The Russian stove burns firewood or wood manufacturing waste.[3][4]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_stove
The modern nations of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine all claim Kievan Rus' as their cultural ancestor,[12] with Belarus and Russia deriving their names from it. At its greatest extent in the mid-11th century, Kievan Rus' stretched from the White Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south and from the headwaters of the Vistula in the west to the Taman Peninsula in the east,[13][14] uniting the East Slavic tribes.[8]And of course the Capitol was Kiev from 882 to 1240.
yes this is exactly the right next move
It’s rather amazing how rapid the Russian lines have melted away. The underpaid Russian military is finding that trying to impose Putin’s will in a foreign country against a determined opponent battling for his survival has become untenable.
Thanks for insight.
This is why I’m no longer a Republican. The GOP and its house organs are little more than a subsidiary of the deep state and its EU-controlled oligarchy. Russia will win this war in its own way, in its own time, and the world (especially Eastern Europe) will be a better place, once the re-alignment is complete and the EU/NATO learns to stay on its own side of the fence. Slava the Ukrainian people, but Zelensky and his shills can go back to their Florida McMansions where they belong.
