All of those wheat growers depend on fertilizer. Costs are increasing, which means the cost of wheat goes up. If fertilizers costs are too high, some farmers may decide not to grow as much wheat.

Fertilizer prices have risen nearly 30% since the start of 2022, following last year's 80% surge. Soaring prices are driven by a confluence of factors, including surging input costs, supply disruptions caused by sanctions (Belarus and Russia), and export restrictions (China).

A new report quoting a leading food economist, Máximo Torero, the chief economist at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, “has warned against moving away from natural gas production too soon, arguing more people will starve to death if the consequences are not thought through.”

Mr. Torero continued, saying, “If you switch the energy mix too quickly, you will increase the price of energy, then you will increase the price of fertilizers, you increase the price of food, more people dying of hunger. So what do you want?”

Natural gas is a key ingredient in the process used to make nitrogen-based fertilizers used on a range of crops, including corn and wheat. Natural gas accounts for 75% to 90% of operating costs in the production of nitrogen.

That is why it would be good for the whole world if the current conflict in Ukraine be resolved soon. For the hungry AND the sellers.

Glad to see you are coming around to a more realistic view of the war. A negotiated solution is needed sooner, rather than later. The sanctions are not working.

Yes, free enterprise is also the most democratic of systems. Millions and billions vote with their money after the most stringent of evaluations. This democratic ‘vote’ affects no one but the individual.

Not wishful thinking at all.

The Russians have not, nor will not achieve their goals through force of arms.

Of course, that depends on what their goals were/are. Takeover Ukraine, teach them a lesson, drive the West out... What else?

As far as the Ukrainians go, this is also true—to an extent.

As so many here point out, Ukraine is being heavily supplied by the West. The turning point we’re going through right now is one of military doctrine and strategy, not weaponry.

If the UKR army adopts Western (American) style tactics of war, and that appears to be happening, then they stand a very big chance to take back the Donbas. Crimea? Agreed. Not going to happen.

Now that said, my view is based on the current forces as arrayed.

Russia could go beyond the Special Military Operation and call for a general mobilization, but so far, have not done so.

Why?

A couple of reasons MAY be:

A. They thought it would be far easier with what the initially committed, and don’t want to suffer increased financial burdens.

B. They are political issues at home if they mobilized. Putin remembers 1991. No one on the Politburo thought Yeltsin would stand on that tank. Yet he did.

Everyone assumes Russia and Putin cannot stand the embarrassment of failure, so must press on. Win at any cost, but win. I don’t think this is realistic, either.

Sometimes you just have to stop beating your head against the wall. There are other ways the future might offer them beyond war.

Trump saw that in Afghanistan. Biden flubbed it totally but leaving was Donald’s original decision.

I believe too many here are invested in a bipolar argument that it is Biden’s/Soros/WEF’s way or Putin’s/Xi/?’s way only.

It is not bipolar.

There are other options and calculations at work here. Some support of Ukraine is justified by America’s oft spoken foreign policy goals. Getting to where we are was a big screw up when certain elements decided to make Russia a boogey man—they weren’t—but THAT I think was part of the campaign to “get” Donald Trump. I don’t believe we “forced” Putin to invade Ukraine. He shouldn’t have, but that’s history now.

but you and I could argue that all day.

What is real right now is Russia is not doing well militarily and has to do something in order to change current events.

Is this current Uke strike the Bocage Country Breakout of July 1944 or the Nazi’s Battle of the Bulge of Dec 1944?

Dude, I’ve always said this.

If you believed I haven’t, you never really read what I’ve been saying.

I’ve asked you many times—going back to early May—why Putin just doesn’t keep the Donbas and call it a win? I’ve been advocating this for a while.

You’ve said Putin had additional goals—a rump-state, landlocked Ukraine, a land bridge to Transdniestria, no NATO promise, Zelenskyy step down, a victory over Europe with sanctions gone and no Russian troop pullout... Or have I misunderstood?

Since I am a racist, sexist, homophobe, please explain why his post broke the rules. There was nothing offensive to me, but then I am not a woman.

I find it hilarious that someone who uses their skin color to reach the highest levels of power cannot be criticized for that very skin color.

Here’s the summary of those 1,100 !! scientists.

Great bullet points which Rs and all of us should have and hopefully will shout from rooftops;

1) “Climate policy relies on inadequate models.

Climate models have many shortcomings and are not remotely plausible as policy tools. They do not only exaggerate the effect of greenhouse gases, they also ignore the fact that enriching the atmosphere with carbon dioxide (CO2) is beneficial.”

2) “CO2 is plant food, the basis of all life on Earth.

Contrary to what climate emergency promoters say, CO2 is not a pollutant. It is essential to all life on Earth. More CO2 is favorable for nature, greening our planet. Additional CO2 in the air has promoted growth in global plant biomass. It is also profitable for agriculture, increasing the yields of crops worldwide.”

3) “Natural as well as anthropogenic factors cause warming.

The geological archive reveals that Earth’s climate has varied as long as the planet has existed, with natural cold and warm phases. The Little Ice Age ended as recently as 1850. Therefore, it is no surprise that we now are experiencing a period of warming.”

4) “Warming is far slower than predicted.

The world has warmed significantly less than predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on the basis of modeled anthropogenic forcing. The gap between the real world and the modeled world indicates that we are far from understanding climate change.”

5) “Global warming has not increased natural disasters.

There is no statistical evidence that global warming is intensifying hurricanes, floods, droughts and suchlike natural disasters, or making them more frequent. However, there is ample evidence that CO2-mitigation measures are as damaging as they are costly.”

Considering item 2)

You can push CO2 down so low you endanger plant life.
From other proxy data sets CO2 was very low during periods of substantial glaciation. I have seen ‘papers ( yes nowadays what does that mean?)’ claiming at CO2 levels of 140 ppm plants start to die.

No, lets not.

At the slightest use of the word Black there are those that shout RACISM!

Much of what is whined about as racism is in fact an attempt to describe a political culture, an Afro Heritage minority of the American citizenry. This discussion is taboo, prohibited, if it strays a whit from media promoted dogmatic political acceptability.

There is never any mention allowed or present of the Afro Heritage minority-minority sub culture that is universally shunned. That is, there is diversity and a minority of the Afro Heritage minority. Those who shout RACISM will not allow the thought that there is actually cultural diversity where they insist on fictional cultural unity.

Members of this Afro Heritage minority-minority are Freepers past and present and such notables as Dr Ben Carson, Justice Clarance Thomas and Senator Tim Scott.

As American cities rot, as conservatives we must support the minority-minority and promote acceptance and growth. It is an uphill struggle when the concept of Afro Heritage diversity is deemed to be racism

Shannon Bream is as dreadful as I thought she’d be... At least Chris Wallace was worth laughing at... or maybe she has his team and will get rid of ‘em.

I wish her well, but this was a horrible start...

The Russians have not, nor will not achieve their goals through force of arms. Of course, that depends on what their goals were/are. Takeover Ukraine, teach them a lesson, drive the West out... What else?

In March 2022 Russia issued four demands/conditions to end the war:

Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was demanding that Ukraine cease military action, change its constitution to enshrine neutrality, acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory, and recognize the separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent states.

It was the most explicit Russian statement so far of the terms it wants to impose on Ukraine to halt what it calls its "special military operation", now in its 12th day.

Russia could go beyond the Special Military Operation and call for a general mobilization, but so far, have not done so.

The historical, linguistic, and culture ties between Russia and Ukraine are hundreds of years old. Putin expressed this feeling of kinship in his lengthy July 2021 article, On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians IMO Putin has not unleashed total warfare on Ukraine for that reason. He could bring Ukraine to its knees by destroying the country's infrastructure, especially the electrical grid. Ukraine and Russia share a 1,500 mile border. They must learn to coexist at some point.

Everyone assumes Russia and Putin cannot stand the embarrassment of failure, so must press on. Win at any cost, but win. I don’t think this is realistic, either.

Can the US and NATO stand the embarrassment of failure? This is a proxy war being waged by us against Russia using Ukrainian surrogates. Biden and Austin have expressed publicly their desire to remove Putin, brand him a war criminal, and weaken Russia militarily. We have declared economic war on Russia with the objective of destroying their economy and currency. In our efforts to isolate Russia, the West is isolating itself from the rest of the world. New geopolitical alliances are forming and the dollar as the world's reserve currency is in jeopardy. We have crossed the Rubicon led by the incompetent and illegitimate Biden regime.

This war has been going on for eight years. You can't view Russia's second invasion of Ukraine in 2022 in isolation. It is the culmination of a failed foreign policy that allowed it to happen. Was it incompetence or a provocation? Did Biden, Blinken, Sullivan, Nuland, Austin, and Milley anticipate the Russian invasion? Did they miscalculate the effect of sanctions, short and long term?

There are other options and calculations at work here. Some support of Ukraine is justified by America’s oft spoken foreign policy goals. Getting to where we are was a big screw up when certain elements decided to make Russia a boogey man—they weren’t—but THAT I think was part of the campaign to “get” Donald Trump. I don’t believe we “forced” Putin to invade Ukraine. He shouldn’t have, but that’s history now.

We missed an opportunity to include Russia in Europe after the fall of the Soviet Union. NATO expansion facilitated Putin's rise to power. We have neocons, Deep State, and the Dems demonizing Russia. Has anyone considered what the Russia hoax did to our bilateral relations and how it constrained President Trump's policies towards Russia? Hillary made up the Russian hoax out of whole cloth and allowed it to continue for Trump's entire term as President putting this nation and Trump's staff thru Hell. Russia didn't hack the DNC server. Mueller indicted Russians in absentia. Russia didn't affect the outcome of the 2016 election. What impact did this have on Putin's perception of the US as we used Russia as a scapegoat?

What is real right now is Russia is not doing well militarily and has to do something in order to change current events.

Is that a fact or more wishful thinking? We have allowed ourselves to swallow Ukrainian propaganda without being skeptical about their account of events. Do we really know how the war is going?

Bert,

Please let me assure that what you wrote is acceptable, at least to me. And can I say, hey, I really don’t understand all that you are expressing. But that might just be me.

I will give you an example that I dunno, might be enlightening. We have black people who live in my community. My immediate next door neighbor was having a problem with one of them and she was telling me about it on the telephone.

So she builds up her voice, until at the apex of the spiel, she screams over the phone...”I AM SICK OF THOSE ....and she end with the big “N” word.

I was completely shut off. I didn’t know what to say. I still don’t know what to make of it, and even of our argumenton this thread. We are all trying to handle it.

Because people all over the world are called names, some very derogatory. Why should black people be exempt? On the other hand, the “n” word will never be acceptable.

Except, on that day, it was just me and the lady next door. Hey, she was mad, not saying if she was right or wroong in whatever was the problem....but can we use derogatory terms just amongst ourselves.

And while I’m on a rant, I get tired of people making fun all the time of Meghan Markle. I don’t know if she wanted the queen to die but I thought it snarky.

But once again, you got a right to your opinion.

Anyway, I posted the list of shows above on LAST WEEK’s Sunday talk show thread. I kept coming back to see more posts on THIS week’s Sunday talk show thread and was wondering why nobody was posting after me.

Heh.

Do we really know how the war is going?

I been thinking this for quite a while. I just don't know what to believe about that war. My eyes glaze over when I read an article about that war.

I think that Biden and his wonderful son and Obama and maybe most of the Dems. are on Ukraine's side, get money, have million dollar jobs with this country.

I also read that Ukraine was a big money launderer but I don't have any idea what a money launderer does.

So I believe nothing.

I'm sure she's a nice person. This isn't about her it's about her news style. Her style is no difference than Chris Wallace's style.

First she sets up a theme. This is effective if you have a viewpoint to push and she does. It starts with Tim Scott. The thread that holds the first show together is 'taking on President Trump and his supporters. She brings up Charlottesville with Tim Scott... it feeds into 'the extreme' meme. There's 74 MILLION PEOPLE WHO VOTED FOR TRUMP. There were 200 idiots at Charlottesville.

The thread is creating a picture that's not true.

Many more people were murdered with a car driven by a black extremest at the Waukesha Christmas parade, But no liberal 'journalists' ever uses that to create a meme connecting democrats to violence. Even if it's truer. . Trump supporters are the least violent group in the US the last 30 years. The FBI could release statistics.... we all know why they don't.

On to Jon Tester to trash MAGA while doing the 'divide Republicans against each other'..into two camps- MAGA vs 'the good' Republicans. It's a researched democrat talking point. Designed to take back Biden's insane harshness. She gives him that platform without questioning it. The theme is MAGA is extreme, democrats aren't.

The panel might have ONE person - Molly - out of five - that might have voted for Trump. Those odds are about the same as every other liberal Sunday show...LP> I'll watch again, but with all the liberal Sunday shows all playing off the same democrat talking points - it gets boring. I want different from FOX. Outside democrat talking points. If I have to watch liberal 'concerns' being discussed I'd rather watch ABC or NBC do it. I'll watch a few more times...but my theory is you don't have to eat all of a rotten egg to tell it's rotten. Same with a book - if the first three chapters aren't readable the rest of the book won't be either.
