California is set to roll out its long-awaited ban on new gasoline cars on Thursday, which is part of its rule to have all new cars sold by 2035 to be electric only in an effort to fight climate change.
Governor Gavin Newsom first announced the ban in 2020 as a means to reduce the amount of smog-induced pollution in the air, which will improve the state's air quality that is the worst in the US.
The move will also make California the first in the world to mandate zero-emission vehicles on its roads.
Thursday's launch will require that 35 percent of new passenger vehicles sold in the state by 2026 produce zero emissions, then 68 percent by 2030 and ultimately 100 percent five years after.
'The climate crisis is solvable if we focus on the big, bold steps needed to stem the tide of carbon pollution,' Newsom said in a statement Wednesday.
The move, according to Newson, will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent in the nation's most populous state.

But of course one can go to Nevada to buy whatever and drive it back to California?
Can I achieve the same thing by hanging a potted plant from my tailpipe?
They won't allow it to be registered in CA.
Well thank Goodness they built that rail system on time and on budget.
I’ll bet that Paul Pelosi won’t be giving up his Porche.
I watched a piece on the electric grid problems in China. China heavily subsidizes EV purchases and the majority of cars in some areas are EV’s. The problem is the cars have contributed to multiple grid crashes. The grid is now woefully undersized for the extra power drain. So, they have rolling blackouts.
Lots of municipalities in California rely on sales tax proceeds. This is going to bite if people go to Nevada or Oregon and buy cars there.
Oh boy! If you live in California, the value of your gas-powered used car just doubled!
The exodus from California will continue.......
Insane.
Ding! Ding! Ding! You win!
He’ll be dead by the time this goes into effect.
Better than 1/3 of new cars sold have to be electric in 2026. Good luck with that. Of course, being as how current gas/diesel vehicle sales are sparse, it may actually happen.
Not a good time to own a gas station.
That is a very good point
dead of old age/cancer/covid/nancy/etc.. lol
Which helps explain the drought they are having. It is, at least, partially being caused by trying to generate electricity.
A California resident must register and pay taxes on any automobile purchased in California.
Any item requiring registration in your state of residency must be declared so you can pay the “man”.
The super rich are finally enacting their plan to depopulate california and to send the peasant class fleeing like a horde of locusts beyond the sierra to destroy everything in their path. Then they will buy prime real estate for super cheap and build giant palatial estates with just enough peasant slaves to maintain them
