Kamikaze drone strike hits Russia's Navy HQ in Crimea and causes a huge explosion despite frantic attempts to shoot it down - after a string of Ukrainian missions deep in occupied peninsula

A kamikaze drone strike hit Russia's Navy headquarters in Crimea and sparked a huge explosion today, in another suspected Ukrainian raid.

Smoke was seen billowing through the air this morning following the attack, which came despite frantic attempts from Putin's forces to shoot down the UAV, as seen in a video where repetitive gunfire is heard.

The naval HQ suffered a direct hit, said reports while terrified Russian tourists fled the popular summer peninsula.

Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev confirmed the attack, writing on Telegram: 'Unfortunately, [the drone] was not shot down, although they worked on the bay with small arms. [It] went low. There were no victims.'

He warned: 'The tenacity of these Ukro-Reich morons is amazing. Everyone, if possible, needs to be home in the next hour.'

Russia also suffered incoming attacks on resort Yevpatoriya, north of Sevastopol, where one man was heard saying: 'This is not funny. Let's pack up and get out of here. These are no fireworks.'

The air defence system was activated in the Western Crimea, the head of Putin's regime in annexed Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said.

'The target is hit. There is no damage, nor any wounded. Our military clearly, professionally and effectively carry out their tasks. I ask everyone to remain calm and trust only official information.'

Initially as the wave of attacks came in, Razvozzhaev said: 'I am at my workplace in the government. As well as many of the townspeople, I heard the clapping in the [city] centre.

'Similar sounds were heard in the Strelka area a little earlier. The air defence was operating in the bay. Naval artillery [operated] in the centre. The same as yesterday. According to preliminary data [they were shooting down drones. Targets were hit. We remain calm. The military is doing their job perfectly.

Drones are the new “atomic bomb” and this is the new nuclear arms race because they’re going to radically alter the way we fight future wars. They’ll alter where and when you chose to wage war, and against whom.

The differences between them are that it’s easy to keep atomic secrets out of the hands of the general public, and atom bombs are technically challenging to build.

Drones technology, on the other hand, is so accessible (and so relatively simple) that even a mental defective like Rob Reiner could go on Amazon and buy everything he needs to make a functional Kamikaze drone.

And like the atom bomb, that’s toothpaste that never will go back in the tube. The nation that has the most sophisticated technology (especially in the defense) takes the catbird seat. And the nations without will be extremely vulnerable to the nations with. Get on board or get run over.

That's why the first thing that gets taken out is the infrastructure that allows for drones to be controlled remotely.

That’s why relatively compact laser systems with AI are being deployed, able to nullify drone swarms.

Except that “infrastructure” can be entirely man portable. Any kind of battery powered antenna to get the controller talking to the drone. And drones can be preprogrammed, this one probably was, this could have been done on straight dead reckoning programming, fly this direction, drop to this altitude, blow up when you hit something. This is literally an impossible technology to shut down. You can hamper some of the “other side of the planet” uses, but that’s stuff is all just showing off anyway.

Also wondering how the Crimea is described as “occupied” when it was annexed by Russia after something like 75 percent of the citizens voted to return to Russia in the plebiscite.

No vote. Russia conquered Crimea in 2014. Ukraine wants to take it back. It's war. Yeah the population of Crimea is Russian speaking. So what?

Our aircraft carriers are vulnerable and obsolete. We can't even attack a nation like Iran right now. They can probably send a fleet of drones to attack our carriers in the Persian Gulf and we won't be able to defend them.

Looks like Putin hired Saddam Hussein’s anti aircraft gunners from Baghdad to defend Sevastopol. Sad performance tonight.
