The fabulously wealthy are fueling a booming luxury ranch market out West
The Washington Post. ^ | August 16, 2022 | Karen Heller

Moguls are lavishing ever-larger fortunes on the rustic life, prompted in part by the pandemic..

...

America remains one of the last countries where so many individuals own colossal swaths of land, some controlling acreage larger than Delaware. The West, a lodestar in the nation’s story, holds an enduring allure for modern land barons.

...

Americans have long looked West to enrich their holdings, panning for mineral rights. The Rockefellers accumulated massive fiefdoms of land, eventually donating much of their holdings to the National Park Service. But the pandemic prompted a Western land grab, with moguls fleeing the cities for homes on the range. Demand remains high. The challenge is inventory. In this region of big spreads, there’s little.

...

The private plane market is booming, making it easier for the wealthy to travel from one of their places to the others. Many of them like to tour prospective properties by helicopter

...

In 2007, the 100 largest private landowners owned a combined 27 million acres of property. Fourteen years later, they control 42.2 million acres,

Ranching eats investment. Winters are a beast. August ignites fire season. Eight people work at the Bar Cross during cattle season, including ranch manager Katie Scarbrough, one of the rare women in the business, who has a master’s degree in ranch management and a 1-year-old son. A large working ranch is nothing without a top manager, particularly if the owner has other properties and businesses to attend to.

Under even today’s hog-tied capitalism, some people will be very successful.

Especially if there in good with the right politicians.

And then they die and some of it gets broken up again.

That was my first thought about this and I agree with the other points you made. They make improvements and eventually the land sells for less than they invested in it.

I am all for the “rich” people coming to Colorado. We sold our property in Colorado at a peak price WAY above expectations because someone who came into money wanted to spend it.

Good. The super wealthy have bought up the land. Now spring the trap: tax the living hell out of it, bleed them dry. Bwah hah hah hah hah!

A quibble with Karen’s statement that they ‘own’ the land. Technically speaking, they rent it from the local government and can pretend they own it as long as they pay the taxes.

Private land ownership was obliterated by the commies in America back when they convinced gullible idiots that ‘property taxes’ were ‘a good thang’ and the only solution.

If you don’t pay your taxes men with guns will eventually show up and remove you from the property. How is that ‘private ownership’?

we have some acres in MT.
The prices for land tripled or more since 2019.
If you search Zillow for chunks over 20 acres youll see listings for 29k in 2019 are now over 100k....maybe even 150k. crazy.

Rich people have more acreage than Delaware? Are they sure it’s not China markets buying our land?

——our land——

The land is privately owned and is not “our land”

Land in great quantity is perhaps the safest investment possible

Depends on whether there are property taxes in the local. If so, then the property belongs to the town ultimately. You just have equity in it.

If it’s China buying our land, it is OUR LAND.

LOL! Try not paying your property taxes. When the sheriff's deputies show up, you can wave your deed around and see how effective that it.

If you live in a locality that has property taxes then you have equity in the property, that is all. It is axiomatic.

We were lucky to get 5.75acres of beautiful N GA rural property. I swooned when our wealthier friends bought 16 acres. 😉

Yes I have heard the internet in that area is less than stellar. I’m seriously thinking about Starlink. Its $100 per month but all you need is access to the sky.
