This is a video only post. Basically an update - Ms. Heche is now in a coma and her condition has worsened. Multiple views of pre- and post-accident video segments, interview with neighbor who evacuated the woman whose house Ms. Heche destroyed (along with her animals) then tried to get Ms. Heche out but was driven back by the fire.

The smoke was so thick and the fire so hot as reported by witnesses and firefighters that they were surprised Heche was alive.

If the skin burns were severe enough and covered enough of her body, that would be enough to take her out but she also has burned lungs that will not recover. I don’t see her chances being very good at this point but she could surprise everyone again. Then she would have to face a long healing process followed by prison time and a life of painful disability.

Dying would likely be a mercy for her at this point. At least she didn’t kill anyone.

You are most probably right. The damage in major burn cases escalates with time. The coma is an example of the body shutting down as the trauma deepens. Should she survive it won’t be a pleasant existence.

I might point out that the act she committed was almost identical to that of the nurse who ploughed through an intersection and killed six people ... whose scalp everybody is now howling for, and rightly so.

Well, the nurse killed multiple people while Heche seems to have harmed no one but herself. If Heche had harmed anyone else, she'd also belong in prison. Both women drove recklessly and dangerously, but different outcomes - that leaves some room for sympathy.

Actually, if you are familiar with BMWs (and Mini is owned by BMW) it looks like that is an automatic. BMW tends to make their automatic gear selector look sort of like a manual, except the knob is flat, not round, and much taller and thinner than on one of their manuals. You can see that in the picture.

Normally, I would agree with you that the likelihood of her faking coma or other illness to avoid having to pay out was very high, but in this case I don’t think that’s what’s happening, given the witnesses and aerial recordings of visible burns.
