KHIMKI, Russia (AP) — A judge in Russia has convicted and sentenced American basketball star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison for drug possession and smuggling.
Judge Anna Sotnikova said the time Griner has served in custody since her arrest in February would count toward the sentence.
Griner reacted to the sentence with little emotion. She listened to the verdict with a blank stare on her face.
While recapping the evidence and giving her findings Thursday, the judge said the 31-year-old Griner illegally brought drugs into Russia.

Well, feces just happened. Lesson learned, don’t do recreational drugs where you don’t know the law.
Gee, it’s almost like this is all being done intentionally to get that arms dealer released.
He KNEW the law! Just thought he was above it. Miss America yet, loser?
Refreshing. Contrast this to our Soros prosecutors and the wave of criminals the train that they can do whatever they please.
Oh.
Darn.
That sentence is too long, but it is their country.
Gee, how sa...oh look, sale on prime rib.
The Russians will bargain hard—they have Bidet over a barrel.
This will be a twenty to one trade or a one hundred to one trade or more....
They may even extract a Bidet promise not to fondle any more little girls.
Oh well . . .
Arrogance ALWAYS goes before a fall of this magnitude!
lol
Not convinced that's a "woman" either.
No way will Biden’s handlers let this stand. It’s too great of a PR opportunity. So I’ll bet you a ruble that before the year is out Griner will be back home.
It’ll be some sort of swap. And we’ll be told only a fraction of what we actually gave up.
Seems a fair sentence.
I hate that is happening to this young “dumb” athlete. I’m pretty sure she’s regretting her decision to carry cannabis oil into a country that was likely to legally hammer her for breaking their drug laws.
When flying into a foreign country, customs documents are distributed before landing. The accompanying literature explains drug laws and potential penalties. She apparently ignored it.
Secondly, bet she misses the country of her birth she disrespected by kneeling during the American national anthem.
Bet you he doesn’t.
Griner brought illegal drugs into a nation which has harsh criminal penalties for doing exactly that. She admits doing so. The fact that she claims she did not know she was doing so is not an excuse even here, in the US, let alone other nations. I don’t understand the pearl-clutching about Griner’s situation on ESPN and other MSM outlets, nor do I understand why the US should free Russian criminals to get Griner freed from the consequences of her actions.
Think pallets of gold bars
That blank stare is common with brainless people who are also stoners.
