Suffolk University has a new poll out, including a question on Republican voter preferences for the 2024 presidential election, and while it is noteworthy that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is within 9 points of former President Donald Trump at 43%-34%, what is more striking is how little support the other possible candidates get.
Vice President Mike Pence is at 7%, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WV) at 3%, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 1%.
Contrast DeSantis’s strong second-place rank to where Republicans were at this point in August 2015. Trump was in front at 22%, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was at 13%, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at 12%, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) at 7%, Ben Carson at 6%, Mike Huckabee at 6%, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) at 5%.
There was no clear alternative to Trump.
SNIP
If Trump and DeSantis do both run, Trump is going to be in for a primary fight far different than the one he survived in 2016.

That has not been the case for any of the most recent presidential administrations. Both Trump and Biden gave their VP's charge of high-profile national problems, COVID for Pence and the Mexican border for Kamala.
Given DeSantis's Florida state actions, I can easily see him getting the immigration problem under Trump.
The Governor of Florida has to have been a resident and registered voter of Florida for at least seven years. So GRDS is good to go.
Had Trump won in 2020, in 2024 who would you be supporting? DeSantis or Pence?
Oh, get real. DeSantis is a Florida native. He’s not going to move to Georgia.
Trump’s residence is Mar-a-Lago.
And that could be changed to any number of properties he owns....
You think he will move in order to make Ron VP? I disagree.
What I am saying is that DeSantis is not gonna buck up against Trump in a one on one for the nomination. IF, BIG IF, they have a meeting of the minds and decide on a Trump/DeSantis Ticket, then Trump’s options for residency change are vastly more available to Trump than DeSantis.
BUT! Trump will run and will win the nomination and I think DeSantis will wait it out for the next time. He’s young enough and he’ll have 4 more years as a kickass Conservative Governor to back it up.
However, he will have to contend with an incumbent Republican Vice President.
Look at it this way. Do you see Joe having Camel Toe be his pick for the second go round? Incumbent VP is not sacrosanct.
Sorry, but I am not going down a "what-if" gopher hole.
“DeSantis said he WOULD NOT RUN IF PRESIDENT TRUMP RAN.”
You’re wrong. DeSantis hasn’t said that he wouldn’t run if Trump runs. DeSantis hasn’t said anything about running (or not running) in 2024. If you think otherwise, provide the quote !!!!
“De Santiago has said he won’t run if Trump does.”
Wishful thinking perhaps, but nonetheless WRONG!
Provide the quote where DeSantis said that. You can’t because DeSantis hasn’t said anything about his 2024 intentions, one way or another.
“DeSantis ain’t Jeb.”
You are so right. Trumps name-calling intimidation tactic has worn thin.....people beyond our base expect better behavior from a President, and we need our share of these people to win elections.
“Thing is that we cannot afford to lose in 2024. Otherwise, this nation is toast. I will support the one with the best chance to win.”
Exactly.........WIN....WIN....WIN
“DeSantis barely beat a scandal tainted Black Democrat four years ago.”
That was four years ago, when DeSantis didn’t have a track record in FL as a Governor. Now he does, and the people of FL really like his record. In addition Republicans have registered a lot more new voters than Dems the past four years. Florida is pretty much a safe Republican state now.
“They need to be sent the biggest middle finger that can possibly be sent and that would be Trump winning a second term”
There is a big problem here. The Dems and the MSM hate Trump. He sets their hair on fire, like nobody else can. They are not going to let him back in the White House. They will do whatever they have to do to keep him out. Anybody with eyes and the ability objectively analyze the 2020 election know that there was widespread fraud in five battle ground states. So we know how far they are willing to go, and they got away with it (with a lot of help from the MSM). They will go even farther in 2024 if necessary. Trump will not make it back to the White House.
I like Ron. Good man. Great Florida Governor.
He has not gotten the 24/7 Anti Trump Treatment from the media.
Nor has he endured fake hoaxes.
In the coming months and years the same media will “test” Ron too.
I thought I read it...but I cannot find it.
I apologize.
Desantis will not go head to head with Trump. If Trump wants ‘24 he gets ‘24.
