"Top Gun: Maverick" took to the skies in late May and hasn't looked back. Tom Cruise's latest release is now the ninth-highest grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office.

"Maverick," the sequel to the hit 1986 film "Top Gun," has grossed nearly $650 million in the US alone, a feat that has only been accomplished by a handful of other films.

Just last week, "Maverick" blew past 2012's "The Avengers" to take sole possession of ninth place on the list, and is within striking distance to pass No. 8 "Jurassic World" and seventh place "Titanic," according to data from Box Office Mojo.

The top 10 highest-grossing movies at domestic box office

Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6M) Avengers: Endgame ($858.3M) Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804.7M) Avatar ($760.5M) Black Panther ($700.4M) Avengers; Infinity War ($678.8M) Titanic ($659.3M) Jurassic World ($653.4M) Top Gun: Maverick ($635.5M as of July 25, 2022)

Top Gun: Maverick' is the first billion-dollar movie in Tom Cruise's career Despite blockbuster hits like the long-running "Mission: Impossible" franchise and 2005's "War of the Worlds," "Top Gun: Maverick" is the first film in Tom Cruise's 40-year-career to gross more than $1 billion globally.

Cruise, who has been a proponent of getting movie lovers back in cinemas and who recorded a thank you video that played before certain "Maverick" showings, last month thanked fans "for venturing out and allowing us to entertain you."

“Tom Cruise will get maybe $30 million of that $1.3 billion haul.”

Movie reports say he gets about $100 million.

I found Maverick to be a real bore, with plot details yanked from Star Wars IV, among other issues, etc. But I am glad a non-woke film is doing well, as it sends a clear message to Hollyweird.

It wouldn't surprise me. Kovic was a not-very-smart guy who was responsive to his Lefty handlers. I felt bad for him at the time because he was one of the few real combat vets in the VVAW - but he was used by the Left as their antiwar wheelchair poster boy but whatever attention it got him was never going to replace what he lost.

The whole thing was pathetic - and now that same Left is giving us an imbecile president (and VP and Chairman of the House, etc., etc.) and Ron is long gone, somewhere.

Tom Cruise will get maybe $30 million of that $1.3 billion haul.

Ton Cruise will get far more than that.
His contrct calls for a 10% cut of the GROSS.
We are looking at at least over $100 million for Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise will make far more money in this movie than any movie he's made before. And he really deserves it. He worked really hard for the movie.

The movie is better if you see or remember TOP GUN before seeing TGM. Some of the scenes are replicated which adds to the fun. And that is his personal Mustang in the movie with a very nice ending.

“The whole point is that Jack Reacher is a physical giant” is not quite correct. The point is that Jack Reacher is quite intimidating. That was established very early in the Cruise films with lightning quick takedowns of multiple adversaries.

I’ve read all of the Jack Reacher books and short stories. I loved the Amazon series, but I still loved the Tom Cruise Jack Reacher films. His Jack Reacher was not a giant but he was believably intimidating and resourceful.
