Top Gun: Maverick' nears $1.3 billion worldwide: Here's how it became the first billion-dollar movie in Tom Cruise's 40-year career

"Top Gun: Maverick" took to the skies in late May and hasn't looked back. Tom Cruise's latest release is now the ninth-highest grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office.

"Maverick," the sequel to the hit 1986 film "Top Gun," has grossed nearly $650 million in the US alone, a feat that has only been accomplished by a handful of other films.

Just last week, "Maverick" blew past 2012's "The Avengers" to take sole possession of ninth place on the list, and is within striking distance to pass No. 8 "Jurassic World" and seventh place "Titanic," according to data from Box Office Mojo.

The top 10 highest-grossing movies at domestic box office

Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6M) Avengers: Endgame ($858.3M) Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804.7M) Avatar ($760.5M) Black Panther ($700.4M) Avengers; Infinity War ($678.8M) Titanic ($659.3M) Jurassic World ($653.4M) Top Gun: Maverick ($635.5M as of July 25, 2022)

Top Gun: Maverick' is the first billion-dollar movie in Tom Cruise's career Despite blockbuster hits like the long-running "Mission: Impossible" franchise and 2005's "War of the Worlds," "Top Gun: Maverick" is the first film in Tom Cruise's 40-year-career to gross more than $1 billion globally.

Cruise, who has been a proponent of getting movie lovers back in cinemas and who recorded a thank you video that played before certain "Maverick" showings, last month thanked fans "for venturing out and allowing us to entertain you."

I saw it. Eye opener. Miscaviage, who is even shorter than Cruise, recruited him and he’s essentially his second in “command”.

He sucks as Reacher. The Amazon series is much closer to the books. The whole point is that Jack Reacher is a physical giant. Makes the story much more believable.

You and your Scientology nonsense on a "Maverick" thread again?
I have seen the movie twice, I don't see anything about Scientology in it. And its a great film.
Feel free to go watch your usual garbage , very woke far left films, and let conservatives enjoy a patriotic, none woke film in peace, OK?

As for Scientology..

“According to Scientology beliefs, Scientology itself is a blend of science and spirituality, with belief in an immortal spirit and in improving that spirit here on Earth using Scientology's methods. Scientologists do not typically dwell on Heaven or Hell or the afterlife, instead focusing on the spirit.”

I liked it but I’ve seen many who share your opinion. I didn’t watch the 2nd one yet.

Born on the Fourth of July was Jane Fonda's baby - and based more or less on Ron Kovic's book. I have never watched that movie because I don't support Jane Fonda in anything and look forward to pissing on her grave.

Ron Kovic was a pleasant sort of guy but mentally really screwed up. He was paralyzed from the shoulders on down when the bullet hit him in his upper spine. His main motivation for being with the Vietnam Veterans Against the War was for attention and he had zero political concepts in that brain of his - he was just a handy object for Jane and John Kerry and the rest of them to use to attack our country and our war.

It's a shame Tom Cruise took part in that sham.

“Weird cult”?
You mean the Democratic Party?
That would be Dementia Joe who sexually abused his own daughter by taking showers with her.
What kind of father does that?

Don’t believe that hogwash dude. Scientology is straight out of hell.

Watch Leah Remini’s documentary on the subject....Scientology is nothing BUT evil.

It’s a cult disguised as a religion.

Any “religion” that requires you to take periodic lie detector tests is a cult.

It was exactly that. Paul Newman shamed him over Top Gun, so he made Born on the Fourth of July to balance the scales. I think it was just basically peer pressure. I doubt if Tom is a conservative, but he quickly went back to being mostly apolitical. I seem to remember him pissing us off here at FR from time to time, but he knows that you make more money if you welcome everybody. And from that, I also doubt he is a far leftist. They can’t keep politics out of anything.

Maverick was the best movie I saw in probably decades.

“He’s the head of a weird cult “

IIRC, it was posted here a while ago that he’s out of Scientology. Don’t know if it’s true.

The movie is a hit because Ccruise finally found out what it is to work hard on a movie and make it as good as he can make it.

What needs to be done is to measure the number of ticket sales.

Price of movies has jumped considerably so it only makes sense if I charge $12 to see a flick that movie will gross more than one from 20 years ago where prices were $8.

Or, movies should be adjusted for inflation. I think if that's done Gone with the Wind still comes out on top....IIRC.

Don't believe that hogwash dude.

You should be talking yourself that, if you believe the nonsense yu are spewing.

Scientology is straight out of hell.

And the Democratic Party of America is?
Can't find anything in America that is more “straight out of hell” than the abortion loving, murdering, imprisoning innocent people without trials for 18 months Democratic Party.

"...This movie is just the shadow of good things to come..."

There was talk of making another movie with Cruise redoing the Pete Mitchell character only this time flying F-35's.
So far it hasn't gotten off the ground.

Not to mention this movie and this thread is not about Scientology. Its about a great movie, which is on track to beat all movies in recent years and make the top 5 in American history.
Can you get that in your little, far left head?

A decade after the end of the Vietnam war, the anti-war activist crowd that had cut its teeth on that war seized on a narrative that Central America was America’s new Southeast Asia... and they were getting the band back together to give aid and comfort to the commies down there just as they’d done 10-15 years earlier for the commies in SE Asia. There was a big celebration for Daniel Ortega in 1985 at which his American apologists met him and gushed about how wonderful he was. Kovic was part of that, and the NY Times quoted him as saying to Ortega:
“What my Government did, paralyzing me and wounding a generation, we will not allow ever to happen again,” Mr. Kovic said. ‘’We know your revolution is a revolution of concern, of caring, of sensitivity.”

I’m sure, 37 years later, all the political prisoners rotting away in Ortega’s gulags agree with Kovic’s assessment.
