Reports: USC, UCLA planning to leave Pac-12 for Big Ten

Is more realignment coming in college athletics?

USC and UCLA are planning to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News is reporting. According to Wilner, arguably the most plugged-in reporter on the Pac-12, the move could come to fruition as early as 2024 but “has not been finalized at the highest levels of power.”

Minutes after the news from Wilner dropped, several other outlets reported that USC and UCLA are in negotiations to join the Big Ten. Big Ten presidents and athletic directors met Wednesday night to discuss adding USC and UCLA to the league, according to The Athletic. On top of that, Sports Illustrated is reporting that the Big Ten is prepared to announce the news.

The reported move for the two Los Angeles-based universities would come on the heels of Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.

It would be the latest shakeup in the world of college athletics, which has been undergoing a massive transformation in the past few years. Texas and Oklahoma will officially join the SEC no later than 2025. The departures of Texas and Oklahoma spurred the Big 12 to add BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF. Those schools will officially become Big 12 members in July 2023.

The NCAA is increasingly irrelevant for purposes of D1 football.

Clemson is definitely better and more relevant than Oregon, in my opinion, and I am sure all of the other schools in the ACC are better than Oregon State, but I am biased: eight of the other nine schools in my high school sports league were Eugene area based, and my mother grew up in rural Lane county.

Go Beavers.

And so, the legendary rivalry between Rutgers and Southern Cal will be further enhanced, if that’s even possible. You can throw out the record books when those two get together.

There are a lot of eyeballs and TV set in the LA area and that value will not longer belong to the PAC 12.

There are a lot more eyeballs elsewhere that are just not going to have any interest in these super college leagues.

Hard to believe, some kind of bargaining chip for more $$$$? Hell UCLA can’t even win a PAC-12 Football Championship against the Arizona’s and Washingtons of the world. They will be a perennial bottom dweller with Ohio State, Michigan and 2/3 of the rest of the Conference. Hell, that makes the Big 10 the Big 16. Are they going to chase a couple underlings out of the Conference?

People/players are sick of the PAC 12 in large part because they don’t like Newsome/Brown and the LW bullsh*t. Quick and true story.

A very talented cornerback who looked very good early in his career at a PAC 12 school in the valley, sat out in 2020 because he hated Newsome’s kung flu policies. He moved to Texas to train for the NFL draft. He was selected a bit later than he probably should’ve because he sat out 2020, but has played well on Sunday and has a broght future. Oh yeh- he is the child of a first generation immigrant from Africa.

His teammate, an o-lineman, did the same, had the same result and also had a good rookie year.

A lot of this wokeism BS is hurting the PAC 12

Last time I went to a college game (football or basketball), it was still the Pac-8.

“And there are a lot of kids who would normally want to play in the PAC-12...”

Then get recruited to play at Stanford.

Yes, I know. When they dropped out, Michigan State replaced them.

But why not invite them back?

My understanding is that they can come back whenever they want. The University is not interested in upgrading the team or serious scholarships, and they don’t want to be beaten and 84-0 every week, so they will keep on playing teams like Beloit.

If you are not in the Big 10 or SEC, you are minor league.

You're half right. ;)

“There are a lot more eyeballs elsewhere that are just not going to have any interest in these super college leagues.”

A future Super Conference Super Bowl between Texas A&M v. Ohio State will get far better ratings (that means money) than Boise State v. Appalachian State.

There are no worse sports fans than those in the LA area. And, they care nothing about college sports.

That’s a more recent development. UCLA now has a large out of State / Country Student body (paying huge tuitions compared to in-state) They have more women that men enrolled. The Asian Student body is just a tick under the Caucasian student body. Factor in other POC and it’s not even close. The Asians are much more focused on Academics not attending Sporting events. It doesn’t change much after graduation.
