If you’re a Hollywood elite facing the wrath of the diversity mob, a cool $4 million judiciously dispersed can buy you a lot of redemption.
Friends creator Marta Kauffman has atoned for the sitcom’s lack of diversity by pledging $4 million to her alma mater, Brandeis University, to establish an endowed professorship in the school’s African and African American studies department.
The result: glowing mainstream media coverage and social media feedback.
In a mea culpa with the Los Angeles Times, Marta Kauffman prostrated herself before the diversity police, saying she is “embarrassed” by the lack of minority characters in Friends.

At least Seinfeld had Sugar Ray in an episode.
Are some people really shocked to discover others do not hang out with people of different races? You'd never know it by watching TV commercials these days but there aren't enough of them to go around.
Besides, they mostly hate us. Or haven't they noticed?
Back in the day, we called them "liberal points". We knew this ultra-liberal couple who had this unbearable friend who was a complete ahole to everybody who knew him. He was surly, a compulsive liar, disrespectful to everbody he met.
But he could do no wrong in their eyes because he was gay and black. Triple backflip liberal points for them both and they would eat sht from him as fast as he could shovel it. They were so proud to showcase him at parties.
Any white person that would go to a black college doesn’t belong in college.
From the little I've seen of both, Big Bang Theory edges out Friends for the title.
Completely different shows. Friends was about relationships. Seinfeld was like Sarte except funnier.
For some reason I don’t see Larry David or Jerry apologizing in a similar manner. The main cast of Seinfeld was just as non diverse as Friends.

Car 54: WHERE ARE YOU?
That would have been something as Ross and Monica were brother and sister. It would have been groundbreaking.
True! In fact, one could almost call it a continent, it's so big!
Regards,
What about black film maker Spike Lee? Is he going to atone as well?
Being sarcastic of course, it would be idiotic for either of them to do that.
“I have got it! I have got it! And I have got to report it!
The stars of the show I believe make $20 million a year in residuals. The show was recently rented by HBO Max for $500 million. The creators and studio are raking in the money.
$4 million is nothing to them and it will be a writeoff.
Search: friends tv show, stars paid how much residuals
In 2015, USA Today reported that Warner Bros. earns $1 billion a year from “Friends.” Of that amount, 2% — or $20 million — goes to each of the stars every single year.
How many nearly all black sitcoms of the 70s and 80s would apologize for a lack of diversity in their show???? None.
They all had the buffoon white boss, neighbor, or “in law.”
It would be like having a character on the fringe of happy days who was the black kid always getting arrested for petty crime, or selling pot to Fonzi.
I never “got” the appeal. They were “pretty”, but not like any of the people I knew contemporaneously.
You must have missed the meeting where they explained that virtue signaling about how much you care about racial discrimination and less plentiful educational opportunities for black students is solved by giving money to a college which specializes in educating privileged white students so they can hire more professors.
It really is funnier than the show. Why wouldn't someone concerned about racial issues in our nation give money to a historically black college, or donate to a community group trying to help people out of poverty, instead of giving more money to an already wealthy college for white kids?
Not surprisingly there are fewer black students at Brandeis than would be expected from the percentage of black people in America, and white students overwhelmingly make up the largest group of students. I suspect Brandeis is a little sensitive about this because their own data about student ethnicity shows percentages for all of the ethnic groups, but they only total up to 80%. And there is already a category in the 80% for "not specified".
I suspect the missing 20% are white kids. Or at Brandeis they just don't understand how percentages work.
