When you lay off that many people in a strategic manufacturing area, you need to depend upon government support to stay afloat and you don't want to piss off the White House. So you play the game and go along to get along. This is how Fascism comes to America

Unfortunately, an unprecedented rise in global energy prices arising from the Russian war in Ukraine has dramatically increased the price of energy in the U.S. and around the globe.

Snipping out some of the irrelevant words, this statement basically says a rise in global energy prices increased the price of energy around the globe.

It sounds like the board at Century Aluminum is propagandizing for their Democrat counterparts.

These layoffs are not due to "an unprecedented rise in global energy prices arising from the Russian war in Ukraine". They're not laying people off for 9-12 months with the expectation that the energy prices will drop, they're laying them off because the company has 9-12 months of excess inventory.

As an aluminum supplier for the U.S. Navy, it's possible they're facing a lot of scrap aluminum coming on the market with the decommissioning of the Littoral combat ships.

My favorite “doom and gloom” channels on youtube have been covering all this sort of stuff for months. And yes, there are some that just feed on people wanting to hear bad news, but there are some that actually give useful info. You just have to temper your emotional response.

:: if the US were energy independent it would still be subject to global prices ::

if the US were energy independent it would drive global prices.
The US is the largest single user of energy provided by petroleum based resources.

It’s wise to seek context for all this. US is a HUGE net importer of aluminum. 5:1 import:smelt

Government policies encourage migration of work to slave labor countries. Follow the money. It works every.single.time.

While this shuttering hurts the locals, it’s a fart in a hurricane as far as national well-being goes. Congress sets the money, tax, and other policies; and those policies drive the economic health of the country.

They just need a smelter that runs on solar and wind. Problem solved.

about a mile way from the smeler there is an aluminum rolling mill that use large quantities of electricity. And a wire company close by with several hhundred employees close by and I think they use aluminum from the smelter. This may cause a domino effect closure of industry.
