In 2010, when Sen. Lisa Murkowski needed help for her write-in campaign, I thought enough of her to run that effort in rural Alaska. If her re-election campaign reached out to me for help today, however, I wouldn’t answer the call.
This time around, I’m supporting Kelly Tshibaka, Murkowski’s opponent. This is why.
In 2014, an Alaskan public official made some harsh and hurtful comments about suicide at a high school, saying that suicide happens because of a lack of support from parents and friends. These comments came shortly after one of the students had taken his own life. Senator Murkowski defended the official’s remarks in the next news cycle, suggesting suicide is the fault of entire communities. Like many Alaskans, I shook my head in disbelief, disgusted.
The following day, many of us Alaska Natives were outside the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) annual conference waving signs for Bill Walker when Murkowski was dropped off so she could share her remarks with the delegates. She and I made eye contact–we have had a close relationship going back to that write-in campaign. When our eyes met, my first expression was disgust and disappointment, and I shook my head at her. I have lost so many loved ones to suicide; her press statement had hurt my heart.
“It’s not me, it’s you.”
“I have lost so many loved ones to suicide...”
Oh? Does Alaska have a large suicide rate?
They actually do - lack of sunlight isolation and cold 🤪
I'm sure the winters there don't help.
That picture of Murkowski on the magazine cover is revealing. She is not aging gracefully nor, self-evidently, serenely. Her face betrays anger and ill-temper. It is time for her to give it up.
Lack of sunlight is huge. I don’t know what the solution could be but I think there has to be something. Also, things were looking up for them with the jobs provided by ANWAR, but that’s gone now.
Any Rino Republican who uses RNC money to get elected but votes Democratic is a lowlife.
As opposed to Urban Alaska?
Many people spend some time with sunlamps to help
Suicide is high among all “native” American groups across the nation. It is due to the high rates of alcohol, drug, and sexual abuse that happen in native communities.
Alaska is no different in that aspect. The lack of sun and extreme cold in the winter doesn’t help.
The easiest way to tell that she is actually a liberal is that she is hideously ugly. All democrat women have a constant stream of miasma oozing from their pores that degrades their looks minute by minute every day like acid dripping on concrete.
It’s more than that, here are just a few observations I remember from my considerable time in and around several Alaska native villages:
1. Most, if not all, of these Native Villages look like a poorly run junk yard. There is trash and debris and worn out cars and equipment everywhere.
2. There is virtually no employment available in these villages.
3. Many, if not most, of these villages are accessible only by water (a river) or air which means teenagers have little contact with urban activities e.g movies, malls, employment, trade schools, social activities (parties) new friends.... etc;
4. In many villages there is zero law enforcement which means crime is off the charts.
5. Rape and incest are off the charts.
6. Groceries are sometimes 100% higher. I remember buying a gallon of milk for 12 bucks. Gasoline was 7 bucks and that was several years ago.
7. Finally, your right............there’s an acute lack of sunlight, crushing isolation and boredom and it’s COLD 2/3 of the year.
On an episode of “Flying Wild Alaska”, Ariel Tweto mentions the high suicide rate in Alaska. She currently runs a nonprofit called “Popping Bubbles” dedicated to suicide prevention in rural villages.

In my great old age I’m reverting to my favorite childhood question.......”but why?” I’m a big believer in every problem having a solution. I also believe that God provided those solutions if we just look for them.
