Actor Matthew McConaughey was spotted on Capitol Hill on Monday and Tuesday, after endorsing gun control laws in an op-ed in the Austin American-Stateman.

The Failure to Launch star was seen by reporters meeting with Senate Democrats Dick Durbin (D-IL), Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Republicans Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Susan Collins (R-ME).

Slow down on hating Matthew McConaughey, FReepers.

First, he was born in Uvalde. Yeah, *that* Uvalde. That’s kinda relevant.

Frankly, I find McConaughey to be pretty thoughtful, one of the better people in Hollywood. I’d encourage FReepers to consider what he has to say, rather than simply dismiss it without a thought.

“Dafuq is his relevance here?”

He was born in Uvalde. That’s the relevance.

On a positive note if 20 or so cops are afraid to go after one 18 year old freak, they may not be very inclined to go after armed gun owners either.

On other topics, I would be more inclined to give him a pass, but “shall not be infringed” really does not need to be debated.

This is what Matthew McConaughey wrote:

https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2022/06/06/matthew-mcconaughey-editorial-time-responsible-choices-guns/7523836001/

I disagree with some of it, including his casual use of the term “assault rifle,” and his generalization that “Individuals often purchase weapons in a fit of rage” (not sure that’s true, frankly).

I personally think schools should be hardened, and no longer “gun-free zones.” That would definitely deter and stop some of these mass shootings.

But what McConaughey writes is a good conversation starter.

For what it’s worth, the 2nd Amendment is not absolute — felons are not allowed to own guns, for example. Their “right” to own guns *should* be infringed. Right?

I’m requesting a meeting with the top five media moguls, producers, executives and such. I want to offer them my ideas on how to make better movies and select better casts.

He answers that question in the article he wrote recently:

“I am a father, the son of a kindergarten teacher, and an American. I was also born in Uvalde, Texas.”

I'd start with the non controversial stuff, like locking all doors and having a method to confirm they are locked.

Pause.

And then read what he wrote, rather than assume you know his positions.

I have considered his comment “Acceptable Sacrifice” and find it to be designed as a sound bite he can make famous and run a political campaign on. I find his sound bite insulting, playing to emotion and low IQ. If he were serious, he be asking why laws on the books aren’t being enforced beginning with Hunter Biden.

It's an old tried and true term. Dems have used it for years when saying you need to "sacrifice" and pay your "fair share".

To be fair, the headline of this piece is misleading.

McConaughey doesn’t endorse “gun control as ‘acceptable sacrifice.’”

He specifically says, “A waiting period to purchase an assault rifle is an acceptable sacrifice for responsible gun owners when it can prevent a mass shooting crime of passion or suicide.”

That’s a good conversation starter.

As I’ve mentioned, I don’t like his use of the vague term “assault rifle.” But maybe waiting periods for certain guns could be a good thing. Maybe. Let’s talk about it, rather than just dismiss it outright.

compared to the expected millions of deaths by government...

Enver Pasha five years 1.1 to 2.5 million.
Vladimir Lenin 1917-1924 4 million.
Adolf Hitler 1934-1945 17 to 20 million
Chiang Kai-Shek 1947 10 million people
Joseph Stalin 1941-1953 40 to 62 million
Mao Zedong 1943-1976 45 to 75 million
Michel Micombero 150,000 to 300,000 lives Saddam Hussein three decades 2 million lives

unarmed populace deathtoll 119 to 173.5 million or

20760 gun deaths in the US excluding suicide.
173,500,000 murdered by government after being disarmed.

is that like .013% ... it may be cold, but this is a more palatable sacrifice than 200 million dead.
