Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo reportedly did not have his radio on him when he arrived on the scene at the Robb Elementary School shooting, where 21 people were killed, including 19 children.
That may have caused delay in Arredondo communicating with police dispatchers, according to the New York Times, citing a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation.
He instead used a cellphone and called a landline for the district police telling the dispatchers the gunman had an AR-15. He then, incorrectly at the time, said that Salvador Ramos was contained.

Ping.
When children are being shot, he wanted them to wait?
I challenge anyone, anywhere to find me a police department that doesn’t issue rifles, allow personnel to carry their own, or have certain personnel on duty that has them.
Someone want to bring up NYPD. Go ahead. They have an army of cops, ESU on duty 24/7 all over they city and the Hercules Teams that are armed to the teeth. Argument over.
Even the small town I’m from on Long Island, the local cops have rifles.
So a school district with a grand total of 4100 students has an independent police force. And the chief of that school police force is somehow in command over ‘real’ police and sheriff deputies when a murder enters one of its schools and starts killing people.
The city, state and federal cops have to be prepared to deal with deadly criminals. His cops have to be prepared to break up playground fights. Why does his being in charge seem absurd to me?
What Police Chief does not have his radio with him?
Arredondo should be flipping burgers, not leading a police force.
This is so tragic, and so many children are dead, because of this comedy of errors. It’s no laughing matter, but the police response seems to have been a farce.
Sure looked to me like the murderer walked through an open door.
Problems can’t be fixed if people try to cover for a teacher.
Every day it’s something new. The door was propped open. No, it wasn’t. The chief knew about the children’s desperate 911 calls. No, he didn’t.
Now it’s the chief didn’t even have a radio. Maybe tomorrow we’ll hear that the chief had a radio, but it wasn’t set to the proper frequency.
It sure looks like they’re deliberately trying to sow as much confusion as possible.
I see the photos of Arredondo with 4 stars on his epaulets then I read he school district PD has 4 officers. So he decided he should have one star per officer. I guess if he had more officers, he’d look like a North Korean general with medals reaching the ground. SMH…
The guy’s not a LEO, he’s a bureaucrat.
Above all else, the bureaucrat’s primary directive is CYA.

I’ve thought about that, and I don’t think it makes a lot of difference. The shooter was determined. He could have knocked on the front door until someone opened it (and someone would have). Or he could have broken a first-floor window and got in. Or he could have waited until the school was dismissed for the day.
Secured doors are important. But it’s more important to have discretely armed staff in every school. And yeah, have a local police force with guts.
True, and I wonder how many other towns would have ended up handling a similar situation just as poorly. Uvalde may have conducted a lot of active shooter drills but it looks like the lessons didn't sink in. Hopefully this isn't typical.
One look at the picture of the Chief and you recognize that he is nothing but a lardass incompetent buffoon never to be mistaken for a competent LEO.
If this clown had any honor he’d have suck started his pistol by now.

Before I retired I worked on a Naval base and was in active shooter drills at least once a year.
There was a drill procedure for each building, exterior door guards were posted, and each interior door with occupants was closed and locked, then whoever was appointed drill leader for each space checked with the building coordinator who was in contact with the base coordinator. This limits movement and access to the shooter(s).
It sounds like this school had no planning at all.

I sure hope you’re wrong about that. Nineteen cops stood in the hallway and did nothing as the children bled out and died - their screams and cries must have been horrible. Yet the cops just stood there. Lightly armed parents without any training would have went in. So I didn’t think this is a training failure. It’s a courage failure.
Bless those Border Patrol guys who went rogue, and took care of business.
They had plans, they just weren’t followed.
Human error causes a lot of tragedy, probably only second to pride.
I would add that a lot of people got complacent and lazy about doing their jobs. Nothing had ever happened so nothing ever would happen. Not a good mind set.
