Turkey has told the United Nations that, at the behest of its president, it wishes from now on to be called "Turkiye" in all languages, the UN announced on Thursday (Jun 2).
"The change is immediate," Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief's spokesperson, told AFP by email.
He noted that Ankara's official letter requesting the change had been received at the UN's New York headquarters on Wednesday.

A Turkey by any other name is still a turkey.
Gobble, gobble.
Bunch of chickens.
I thought that only applied to Constantinople.
In a related story, primates will now be known as ‘monkiyes.’
How about changing it back to Anatolia? Why name it for Turkish invaders?
I agree.
For example, Norway has two official names: Norge in Bokmål and Noreg in Nynorsk. The English name Norway comes from the Old English word Norþweg mentioned in 880. (Gotta love the Brits).
Or the Spanish for Spain is España.
You mean Magyar?
Yeah, I think I’ll just stick to calling them the “Rifkis”.
Oh brother
Just tell them to stuff it or we will baste them.
yes they will.
There have been other name changes, such as when Peking became Beijing, and Bombay became Mumbai.
The Peking used to be berthed at South Street in Manhattan. My brother and I used to say the name and giggle. (The joys of being single digits in age!)
I just call it “Byzantium” and I say the Turks are illegal invaders sitting on occupied Christian land. :-)
Magyarzog!!!
The Magyars I meet are pleased enough with the name Hungary as they try to associate themselves with the Huns of Attila.
Just hope the Albanians don’t get any ideas and make us start calling it Shqiperia.
Burma and Myanmar is analogous to Holland and the Netherlands.
The Burman nation conquered various other kingdoms and nations in the period between 1500 and 1750.
Today to ensure that it doesn’t crack apart along ethnic faultlines it is called a neutral Myanmar.
Most countries have utterly different names in English from what they have called themselves for centuries
Like
Egypt Misr
Hungary Magyarzog
Georgia Sakartvelo
Albania Shqiperia
Finland Suomi
Sweden Sverige
Germany Deutschland
Poland Polska
India Bharat
China Zhonggua
Japan Nippon/Nihon
Korea DaehanMinguk
Etc etc
Strangely enough, the term Byzantium is false and was false.
It was coined by German scholars in the 1800s to refer to the eastern Roman empire as a way of differentiating them.
But the “Byzantines” called themselves simply Roman’s!!
And the Turks who conquered them, called them Roman’s. So too did the Bulgars etc.
A funny story is in 1919 when Greek soldiers took over a Greek speaking island that has been Ottoman and not freed by Greeks during their 1821 independence.
The island children came to watch the Greek soldiers and one of the kids shrieked “Hellenes” (which is what the greeks call themselves today and which was used in the ore 1493 world go refer to rural Greeks.
The Greek soldiers said “what do you mean, you are also Hellens and speak Hellenic”.
And the child said “No, we are Romans!”
