Secure the damn school. The kid got in because a teacher had propped open a door.
No outside windows for that classroom??

That’s a good first step. But I honestly don’t think it means all that much. A shooter with a hammer could easily break a glass door or a first-floor window, and be inside in a minute. Or he could just wait until the dismissal bell rang for the day.
I favor allowing properly vetted staff access to firearms, as I noted in my post #7. And have one of them armed and standing discretely off to one side at dismissal time. Some churches do that now.

Why not also put a combat-experienced cop in every school — with a pistol, a bullet proof vest, and access to a safe with some real firepower?
Ask for volunteers and then screen, train, and arm a select number to be assigned patrol duties (at extra pay, of course). Had even one or two been armed during Uvalde, perhaps they could have distracted this lunatic enough to get the brave police involved, and the kids might have survived.
I saw a story yesterday about a school that has not only a police officer, but a police dog too. This might make a lot of sense. The dog can be trained to detect gunpowder in lockers and attack active shooters. It’s always nice to have an animal around anyway.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see this implemented on a large scale.
And I haven’t seen how the killer gained access to the classroom full of children and teachers. Why wasn’t the room locked down?? When the police tried to get into the room they couldn’t break down the door and apparently had to wait for someone to find a key.
Much better to have a room full of shot kids than ...god forfend..armed teachers they say.
Really, no one is trained enough in active shooter situations, not even cops. I remember my employer hiring a trainer and having a class on what to do in that situation, but really, you just have to have the right mindset. The right mindset is one of sacrifice, that you will do what it takes to protect others regardless of the danger to yourself. Even cops have a problem with this one, as we’ve seen.
