Fort Bragg to be renamed Fort Liberty among Army bases losing Confederate names

A blue-ribbon commission has recommended new names for nine Army bases named after Confederate leaders, including Fort Bragg, which will be recommended to be renamed Fort Liberty, the panel disclosed Tuesday.

The panel has recommended that another eight Army bases be renamed for a diverse group of individuals with ties to the Army.

ABC News was first to report the full list of recommended names by the Congressional Naming Commission created by Congress to suggest name changes by 2023 for U.S. military installations named after Confederate generals and leaders.

Congress and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin must approve the nine naming recommendations, although it remained unclear if Congress would be able to weigh in with names changes of its own before the list is submitted to Austin for final approval.

Just finished Bruce Catton’s book on the Civil War. He certainly didn’t mince words about how incompetent Bragg was. He was kinder to Hood and Johnston.

Catton LOVED Nathan Beford Forrest though. It’s as if J.E.B. Stuart never existed.

Bragg, not as bad as Hood.

It’s not like the Yankee Amry didn’t have it’s share of knuckleheaded generals.

Oh, he was not kind to the political generals on the Union side either. Catton excoriated Nathaniel Banks, Benjamin Butler, and Franz Siegel especially.

Halleck didn’t fare much better.

There’s a firearm dealer in town whose business name is Fort Liberty. I wonder if he can sue?

I went through Airborne in 1981 at Ft Benning. I went through HALO school in 1983 at Ft Bragg. I will only know these places by these names.

Don’t know why they need to change this one. Bragg was inept. He probably did more for the Union cause than the Confederate.

In defense of Bragg he was one of the few Southern generals that took seriously discipline and the care and feeding of his troops.
Yes the south had shortages but mostly the troops looked and dressed like shit because they were allowed to look like that. Under Bragg at least the troops looked good.

Washington owned slaves. Will it have to change names? Insanity begets insanity.

To be fair, Catton’s characterization of Bragg was that he was a good strategist who tended to get bogged down in details in terms of execution and often far too cautious. Of course, many Union generals could be described the same way especially Hooker, Meade, and even McClellan.

Absolutely everyone in the military that jumped from an airplane or flew them from Pope, will always call it FORT BRAGG.

Conservatives should continue calling it Ft. Bragg.

I graduated US Army Infantry School at Benning in 1970. (Nam 1971).

I feel the same about only knowing those places by those names.

I grew up at Fort Bragg. Learned to ride my first two-wheeler there without training wheels when I was 5 years old. My Dad was with the 82nd and then the 101st in later years. When this is done, I will still have grown up at Fort Bragg.
I will also have lived at Fort Benning and Fort Hood during my husband’s career.

Both my husband and dad have passed away. They don’t have to know what these people have done to America’s history.

A rose by any other name.

When they finish re-naming military bases, what will they have?
A footnote that reads, This was once Fort Bragg. It will always be to the knowing.

The only reason that I don't have a Confederate flag sticker on my car window is because if I did I'd be stopped by cops here in the Gay State a dozen times a day. *And* I'd have my tires slashed on a nightly basis.

Why was a Fort named after that incompetent General in the first place?

Good point. But, strangely, to our more sophisticated times, the nation in the late 1800s thought that the way to reunite the nation was to show respect to the defeated foe and its leaders. Now these decisions were made, for the most part by men who had actually fought in the Civil War, so they obviously were incapable of seeing the wisdom of completely trashing your opponents as the way to unify the nation.

President Brandon is an advocate of this political philosophy. Belittling President Trump and his supporters is a great way to unify the nation.
