In defense of Bragg he was one of the few Southern generals that took seriously discipline and the care and feeding of his troops.
Yes the south had shortages but mostly the troops looked and dressed like shit because they were allowed to look like that. Under Bragg at least the troops looked good.
To be fair, Catton’s characterization of Bragg was that he was a good strategist who tended to get bogged down in details in terms of execution and often far too cautious. Of course, many Union generals could be described the same way especially Hooker, Meade, and even McClellan.
