I am a middle-aged African American father, reeling from the sheer horror of what happened to members of my community in Buffalo. Through my pain, I am praying for all the victims and their traumatized families, friends and neighbors -- and for all the minority Americans who are feeling even more afraid now than they did before.

Because you are male, you were born a winner of the patriarchal jackpot. You are more likely to rise to the top of the career ladder and will be better paid on your way up. The state will not attempt to dictate what you can and cannot do with your own body. On top of that, because you are White, and you live in a country that is structurally racist, you enjoy the huge privilege your skin color gives you.

You will benefit from better education, health care, job opportunities and finances, for example, than your peers who happen to be Black. Although your ancestors also likely moved here from somewhere else at some point in the past, it probably wasn't as shackled slaves. If you have the added bonus of being Christian, heterosexual, cisgender and able-bodied, then you might well never know firsthand how it feels to be stigmatized, marginalized or hated because of some aspect of yourself over which you have absolutely no control. That makes you very lucky indeed.

A question for the middle-aged black father: Are you reeling from the sheer horror of what happens every day to ‘members of your community’ at the hands of black men? If not, why not? Don’t those black lives matter?

Reeling from sheer horror is something I’d expect from someone experiencing war, or perhaps seeing the death camps for the first time...not a news report of a terrible thing; there have been plenty of terrible things in the news. Did you reel at the news from Waukesha?

I'm still waiting for someone to properly explain this to me. If "white privilege" is so much better than "black privilege", then why does every single mulatto only associate with their black side, and never their white side? All the "racism" would go away if only everyone knew they were also white!

If you want better education, Tell your parents (note the 's' on the end of that word!) to participate in your education, to send you to a better school (most private schools have financial aid for poor kids). How many college scholarships are there for white kids? Especially white males? How many scholarships have requirement #1: NOT white? Health care? Never seen a hospital or medicine that was whites-only. Many health issues are lifestyle choices, not because you're black. Job opportunities? Find me ONE company with affirmative action policies for white guys. Go on, I'll wait. Finances? Are there certain taxes that require an "I'm black" checkbox? Maybe this has more to do with how you, personally, spend your money? Maybe mom 'n' dad should have taught you how to make a weekly/monthly budget? What to prioritize your spending on?

Right, because you have zero choice in whether or not to be Christian, heterosexual, or 'cisgender'... As for 'able-bodied', I've seen a guy with one arm make a better outfielder than the rest of the team. Sure, some injuries are severely crippling, but what you do with that and how you overcome it (or not) are a much bigger part of life than not being 'able-bodied'. And I don't know of too many people that are seriously out to get cripples or those with some kind of disability.


I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant; it's what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.
