Pelosi barred from Holy Communion over abortion advocacy

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is barred from receiving the Eucharist in the Archdiocese of San Francisco because of her efforts to codify federal protection for abortions, according to a May 20 statement from Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone.

“I must make a public declaration that [Pelosi] is not to be admitted to Holy Communion unless and until she publicly repudiate her support for abortion ‘rights’ and confess and receive absolution for her cooperation in this evil in the sacrament of Penance. I have accordingly sent her a Notification to this effect, which I have now made public,” Cordileone wrote in a letter released Friday.

The archbishop’s move came as Pelosi and other Democratic politicians have amplified calls to federally protect or fund access to abortion, amid widespread expectation that the Supreme Court will soon overturn Roe v. Wade.

Pelosi, Speaker of the House since 2019, represents California’s 12th Congressional District, which sits entirely within the city of San Francisco. The Congresswoman is a Catholic, and has often cited her Catholic faith as a formative element of her political worldview.

“That is why I communicated my concerns to you via letter on April 7, 2022, and informed you there that, should you not publicly repudiate your advocacy for abortion ‘rights’ or else refrain from referring to your Catholic faith in public and receiving Holy Communion, I would have no choice but to make a declaration, in keeping with canon 915, that you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”

“The time has now come,” Cordileone wrote.

“You are not to be admitted to Holy Communion until such time as you publicly repudiate your advocacy for the legitimacy of abortion and confess and receive absolution of this grave sin in the sacrament of penance.”

Bishops have jurisdiction over a place; they aren’t free-floating plenipotentiaries. Biden would be under either Wilmington, DE or Washington. Abp Cordileone’s decree against Pelosi is strictly only enforceable in San Francisco. I guarantee she’ll attempt to take communion in DC or Florida or wherever.

I don’t think the Archbishop will cave, not so sure about Rome.

I just read what Bishop Cordileone said, he’d sent her numerous letters to talk about the situation pastorally and she ignored him.

Since he tried to talk to her on the subject privately, I don’t think they will cave, or they can’t.

Now, the Bishops need to go down the list of Dem CINO abortion promoters and put them all on notice. It’ll be good for real Catholics.

She shouldn’t be receiving the Eucharist while in a state of mortal sin anyway, so this is for her own good. But the media don’t see it that way. They twist it into being some sort of punishment. Whatever.

Wait, what? Catholics holding politicians accountable?

I had to look twice to make sure this wasn’t the Bee or something.

Good for the Archbishop. Frankly, I am surprised he had the backbone. For too long the Church has left these leftist baby killer politicians slide.

They say, that their religion is against abortion, and sometimes that they personally oppose abortion, but then go on to say, that they oppose laws which would impose their religious values on people.

In one sense, I can see how an elected official would keep their faith and their public duties separate, as the law is not based on religion.

But as you stated, abortion is much larger than a religious issue. And many laws reflect a similarity to religious guidance-expected since religion and government provide a basis of stability and order in society.

I believe the archbishop got this right-she can still vote to establish access to abortion, but if so doing, she cannot call herself a "devout" or even a practicing Catholic.

I think a direct disobeying of the Archbishop will not happen. If she presents herself, she is ready for excommunication.

B. We don't need a priest's blessing to touch Jesus. God didn't give our fellow man that kind of power over us. Jesus Himself said that anybody who asks God for His Spirit gets Him

The bishop and all ministers of the Holy Eucharist have the responsibility: (1) to safeguard its sacredness so that it is not treated sacrilegiously and (2) to do what he can so that those under his pastoral care do not compound their sins by receiving in an unworthy manner and who cause public scandal by doing so.

What a tragedy it is that Pelosi put politics over the reception of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord and Savior. The Bishop did what had to be done for the good of the Church and the faithful.

It will most likely be a priest from an Order that is not directly under the control of the Bishop or some other wiggle room.
