Erdoğan says Turkey will not approve Finnish and Swedish membership of Nato
The Guardian ^ | May 16, 2022

The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has said he will not approve Finland and Sweden joining Nato.

Reuters is reporting he has said Swedish and Finnish delegrations should not bother coming to Turkey to convince Turkey to approve their Nato bids.

Finland and Sweden, while both Nato partners, have long viewed membership as an unnecessary provocation of Russia, their powerful eastern neighbour. Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, however, has led to a radical rethink of their security policies.

Membership of Nato would require ratification by all existing members.

Of course he won’t he would be a hypocrite, since Turkey, like Russia, has also illegally invaded, and continues to occupy another country in Cyprus.

Turkey goes dark without russian energy. Overnight.

Of course Erdogan won’t consent. Obviously. That is why Putin is nonchalant about the finns and swedes trying to join. It’ll never happen. [I believe new NATO members must be unanimously accepted by existing members - one holdout and no membership]

Turkey should have been kicked out of NATO many years ago.

I never liked the idea of Turkey being a member of NATO. Now I don’t even like the idea of NATO. Europeans should join together and fund their own alliance. Leave America out of that alliance. If the SHTF then maybe we would consider helping Europe, but it is time Europe pays it’s own way instead of funding their socialist schemes by not funding their militaries and relying on America for their security.

Gonna blow up in their face. Because of course it will. Look who’s in charge.

Turkey is NATO because of strategic geography. That’s it. A jumping off point for US forces into southern EU, middle east and Northern Africa. Best place for airbases, except for that whole “the country is run by muzzie nutcases” thing.

There ARE actual strategic considerations beyond “Putin is the New Hitler” that permeates most discussions on this forum.

To the Turks, everything is “shurla burla”, which means “like this, like that”. You never know what will happen. All foreigners are “ayip”, they’re considered dirty. So is homosexuality, it’s a big crime here, but most of them do it every chance they get. There are about thousand things that are “ayip”, for instance, you can stab or shoot somebody below the waist but not above because that’s intent to kill. So everyone runs around stabbing everyone else in the ass. That’s what they call Turkish revenge. I know it must all sound crazy to you, but this place is crazy.

Their price is the F-35’s once promised prior to their buying Russian anti aircraft missiles. Don’t know if Congress will sell them or not.

I’d say that observation has some slight appeal, but just look at a map. Turkey is in the middle of every hotspot in the region. Their location is the ONLY reason anyone gives a crap about them, and the only reason they were ‘invited’ into NATO. Turkey turns reverts to the stone age without russian oil & gas, overnight. Does anyone really think the turks will now live in the dark for Bi-sh*t? HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA.
