MEYERSDALE, Pennsylvania — Unless either Dr. Mehmet Oz or David McCormick pulls out a miracle between today and Tuesday evening, just over 20% of the Republican primary electorate is going to nominate Kathy Barnette for U.S. Senate.
This would mark the first time in modern Pennsylvania Republican primary history that such a complete unknown wins with no statewide infrastructure to support her candidacy, zero money, and little scrutiny. If she succeeds, she will have upended a race between two capable candidates who, up until a week ago, seemed to be locked in a two-man contest.
This would also mark the first time in Pennsylvania Republican primary history that an insurgent candidate has ever won a primary race. ***

*** There is no state party to rescue Oz or McCormick, because the party didn’t even have the spine to endorse in this race. ***
As a consequence, the party’s decision not to endorse in the governor's or Senate races has had long-reaching implications. By failing to do so, it left a ridiculous number of candidates in the race for both offices — in particular for the governor's race, where nine candidates stayed in long past their expiration date. This allowed the eccentric, far-right Doug Mastriano to suck up all of the oxygen.
In short, if Barnette wins — and everything at this moment points in that direction — she will undoubtedly run shoulder to shoulder with Mastriano. They’ve endorsed each other, they campaign together all the time, and they hold the same outsider standing — even outside of Trumpworld.
It is hard to find any pathway where either of them will win in November, even in the remarkable conditions available to Republican candidates right now.

Should be banette will get the senate nomination not democrat nomination
Nothing that’s not wrong with Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan and every state..
The Dims cheat.
And the Rinos surrender.
Too much scrapple, pork roll & wooder ice will do that.
What’s wrong with Salena Zito is the question.
Difference being he was a national known figure for decades, and his life was an open book. Barnette, is still hiding things days before primary (would not tell Shannon Bream where & when she was an Adjunct Professor).
It is disappointing to hear this from Zito. Oh well, what does she know.
It’s hard to beat the massive voter fraud in Filthadelphia and Pittsburgh.
The Republican dominated legislature unconstitutionally passed Act 77, Universal Mail In Voting, BEFORE the CCP Virus was on the radar.
PDJT won PA, in a landslide, but after the shenanigans with the mail in ballots, Xiden was declared the winner.
The legislature had 2 years to get rid of Act 77, but didn’t.
The GOPe has been trying to tamp down the expectation within their electorate to actually oppose Gov. Wolf or investigate the election shennangigans in 2016. People are mighty pissed off to begin with. And then DJT gives us Dr. Oz? WTF?
Spot on.
I'm a big supporter of Salena and have read and emailed her {back and forth} for 2 decades.
I am usually 98% with her, but this time, just WOW.
Maybe she's been around DC for too long.
Me neither.
Sorry to see it.
It has been answered today. The “scandal” is a fraud, just like Russian collusion was.
Who is “they”? Kathy won the debate, and people decided ON THEIR OWN that she is the best choice.
Not true. Not correct.
Christine O’Donnell self-immolated.
I live on the border of DelaWhere and saw it up close and personal.
Not accurate to say she and Barnette are the same.
Yes. It’s weird.
WOW, the JOY and THRILL of people actually picking their candidate, instead of it being hand picked from those who graduate from Harvard. I would TOTALLY support any black woman who had the endorsement of the AMISH. Go...go..to the finish line. Just like the Kentucky Derby upset, I hope to see yet another. Can’t wait for Tuesday.
Oh, BS. She is articulate, and thinks quickly on her feet. She is an excellent candidate who will win in November.
“The problem is that when insurgents win the primary, the RINOs refuse to support them and, instead, work to help the Democrat.”
I agree with you. IMHO the RINOs worked with the Republicans to defeat President Trump in 2020. They were part and parcel to the cheating that was going on.
I have a lot of respect for Salena Zito. I am voting for both Mastriano and Barnette. The leading Dem. Candidate for Seante just had a stroke but says he is staying in the race. I DO think Barnette can beat Fetterman...but if he drops out, I’m not so sure she could beat Lamb. Fetterman is left of Bernie Sanders...Lamb is viewed as more of a moderate. Shapiro is a slimy little Poindexter. Matriano would be a good governor and I think he can win. Time will tell.
Same problem in PA as there is every election cycle somewhere in America, a conservative/populist outsider enters the race, picks up some support, and the party insiders tell the rubes that it is they who have to compromise because that candidate is unelectable. Again and again, forever and ever.
If one wins a primary, as Wagner and Barletta did in 2018, (both were running in winnable elections) the state party acts as if they never heard of them, sits on its hands and pretends there is nothing that can be done. They don't want to work for their bloated salaries, they don't want to actually win elections, and they certainly don't want to put in the hours to convince the urban and suburban potential republican voters to actually vote for a conservative for once.
That is all known, and its true even if Barletta and Oz are the candidates. The positive thing about Mastriano is that he can attract a crowd for grassroots events and possibly make an end run around that incompetence. It will be an uphill battle, but it doesn't need to be, and it shouldn't be.
Didn’t she produce her DD214?
