What’s Behind America’s Shocking Baby-Formula Shortage?
The Atlantic ^ | May 15, 2022 | Derek Thompson

America’s baby-formula shortage has gone from curious inconvenience to full-blown national crisis.

In many states, including Texas and Tennessee, more than half of formula is sold out in stores. Nationwide, 40 percent of formula is out of stock—a twentyfold increase since the first half of 2021. As parents have started to stockpile formula, retailers such as Walgreens, CVS, and Target have all moved to limit purchases.

The everything shortage isn’t new. But rationing essentials for desperate parents? That’s a twisted turn in the story of American scarcity.

Three factors are driving the U.S. baby-formula shortage: bacteria, a virus, and a trade policy.

First, the bacteria. After the recent deaths of at least two infants from a rare infection, the Food and Drug Administration investigated Abbott, a major producer of infant formula, and discovered traces of the pathogen Cronobacter sakazakii in a Michigan plant. As a result, the FDA recalled several brands of formula, and parents were advised to not buy or use some formula tied to the plant.

The only time I go to the store is when I run out of beer. I’ll have to check the baby aisle to see what’s going on. Boy, if they run out of beer, Houston, we got a problem.

Use boob-juice, it’s better for the kid and WAY cheaper.

“Three factors are driving the U.S. baby-formula shortage: bacteria, a virus, and a trade policy.…”

Not really true because any of these could be handled in a matter of hours.

Make your own. It’s a lot easier than breast-feeding.

I cannot, in good conscience, give Joe Biden or his regime an “F” for their efforts on this supply chain fiasco.

But that is only because they do not have a “G” or “H” ranking. This is WAY below mere failure, this is malign intent.

It has only become apparent in this crisis, but baby-food is effectively a government-crony capitalist oligopoly.

3 producers account for 98% of USA supply, and two domestic producers are about 80% of supply.

Fed.gov buys over 50% of all baby formula and dictates pricing - for WIC/Foodstamps and contracts are often for several years at a time. The FDA highly regulates the two domestic plants producing it. Its nearly impossible to enter into this business because its so tightly regulated. So shut down the largest supply factory, and you have just created a massive shortage.

Breastfeeding is incredibly easy and what breasts are for. Much easier than formula especially in the middle of the night. Always present and always at the right temp and much much healthier. And no shortages to worry about. And free. Breastfed babies are healthier and have higher IQs. I breastfed all 4 of my babies (worked part time too but pumped).

Abbott. I wonder if that’s the same company that made the rapid COVID tests.

There was no baby formula shortage at the height of the pandemic in 2020.

Trump was president, of course this was before massive election fraud.
