Former President Trump warned Thursday that Republican Kathy Barnette, who is making an unexpectedly strong showing in polls, will lose the Senate race in Pennsylvania if she captures the GOP nomination.
Ms. Barnette, a 50-year-old conservative commentator and veteran, is receiving more attention in the closing days of the Senate primary battle, stealing the spotlight from her more well-known, and well-funded, rivals: celebrity physician Mehmet Oz, who has Mr. Trump’s endorsement, and businessman David McCormick.
“Kathy Barnette will never be able to win the General Election against the Radical Left Democrats,” Mr. Trump said in a statement. “Dr. Oz is the only one who will be able to easily defeat the Crazed, Lunatic Democrat in Pennsylvania. A vote for anyone else in the Primary is a vote against Victory in the Fall!” he said.
Ms. Barnette, who is Black, has come out of nowhere to seize headlines in the GOP nomination race.

The race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey is set to be decided Tuesday and will set the table for one of the most-watched, and most expensive, Senate races in the nation in the fall. On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman is leading his rivals in polls.
Mr. Trump said Thursday that Ms. Barnette has political baggage that will drag her down, but said he would be happy to support her in the future.
“She has many things in her past which have not been properly explained or vetted, but if she is able to do so, she will have a wonderful future in the Republican Party—and I will be behind her all the way,” Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Trump, this was completely uncalled for - by a long shot.
Though my piddly vote won’t mean anything either way, it’s going to Barnette.
If anyone, ANYONE should be behind her populist message, it’s you!
She may not be the ‘perfect’ candidate, but those other two have way WAY too much stink on ‘em.
By saying this, Trump made it harder for her to win if she prevails in the primary and thereby needlessly alienated her supporters. The Democrats are team players who are smart enough to avoid this.

1. Statewide elections in PA are won and lost in the suburbs of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
2. Democrats outnumber Republicans by about half a million registered voters in PA.
When you combine these two, you understand that a Republican can't win a statewide election in Pennsylvania without a sizable number of Democratic votes.
The typical swing voter in PA is a dopey suburban Karen who wears a mask on her face 24 hours a day. These nitwits are far more likely to vote for Oz than for any other GOP candidate in a statewide election this year.
Not in PA, but don’t care for any of these three. Saw this gal on the news the other day, something about her rings phony, but then it’s the same for me with that OZ guy.
She’d be the weakest in the general, though.
I am the only GOP #PASenate candidate who can win the general election.
I can go into communities Republicans don’t usually go to and I can flip those votes. I say it because I’ve done it.

Trump isn’t really talking about unexplained and unvetted things. What he really means is that she’s black and that the people in the middle of the state, which is where the Republicans are, won’t vote for her.
I think he’s wrong and I also think that he is encouraging the Republicans to miss a valuable opportunity. It’s even one he himself tried to capitalize on, when he spoke to blacks in 2016 and asked “what have you got to lose?”
Blacks are, in many ways, conservative. Black voters don’t like the woke nonsense and they sure as heck don’t like the defund the police movement. They know that stuff is white upper middle class ideological preening which actually hurts black people (among whom the murder rate has skyrocketed with declining law enforcement).
The conservative approach should be appealing to blacks. Barnette can make it so. She’s got this Republican’s vote.
Well stated.
I have seen reports there are questions about her military service she refuses to answer.
I know her. Not well, but I was her daughterâÂÂs American Heritage Girls leader and I know they share my very conservative Christian values. She homeschooled her kids, what does Trump think sheâÂÂs hiding? Maybe he should try to find out more about her - she ran for the house in 2020, but lost. So she didnâÂÂt come out of nowhere. SheâÂÂs just not a career politician. And she doesnâÂÂt plan on it either- sheâÂÂs promised to serve for only 2 terms.
IâÂÂm annoyed that dr. Oz is running in PA. He doesnâÂÂt live here. He doesnâÂÂt share my values. Calling a baby a clump of cells is not my values at all. He should stick to celebrity tv doctor. ThatâÂÂs what heâÂÂs good at. I donâÂÂt trust him to be our senator. Kathy Barnett will be an excellent replacement for Toomey.
The Democrat field is weak. The front runner Lt. Governor has neck tattoos and his greatest accomplishment was making sure his 420 pothead friends could get weed during the pandemic.
Trump is wrong here, would never support Dr. Oz.
I see a lot of Barnette posts in media that fail to mention she authored a book making the case for conservative blacks benefits to themselves, and America.
In the dem’s universe, that’s a plus.
I am born and raised in Pennsylvania. I can tell you now that Oz might win in the Philly suburbs against Frankenstein, but he will lose big in the “Alabama” region of Pennsylvania.
How many Amish and evangelicals do you think will vote for a Muslim?
How many “Molly Maguires” in the coal regions do you think will vote for Oz?
How many Poles and Slavic’s in “Deer Hunter (1878)” regions of Pennsylvania will vote for Oz?
None, nada, zilch!
The choice has to be either “China” McCormick or Barnette. That’s all we got.
You heard that did you?
That is 100% wrong…He does not support her and like all the other washer politicians are spreading false rumors about her. If there’s a problem over past that they know if one of them they bring it up? They’re spreading hearsay lies. Trump who I support I have supported is becoming one of them.
Trump has made many lousy choices in staff, etc.
Those mistakes undermined much of his accomplishments.
