She said the 'trans' lobby has convinced people not to worry about children 'socially transitioning' because it was reversible but, she argued, this is wrong as children whose gender change was affirmed by the adults around them commonly find themselves in an 'impossible situation' when they reach puberty.

Szaz’s work became policymakers’ Bible in the 60s and 70s. I lived it. The mentally ill often lived on farms and institutions prior to the GREAT UNCARING.
They undid hundreds of years of work to get the mentally ill and unable cared for instead of locked in cellars or killed.
“Some of the unhappiest, most depressed, most anxious people I have ever known were those trapped in gender dysphoria.” I too have noticed this. Those who don’t specify as male or female ..... majority are on multiple psychiatric meds (as if enough of the population is not already on antidepressants) and often on heavy doses and anti-psychotics. It’s a sad state of affairs the left has created with this young generation.
As should homosexual tendencies, formerly known as Same Sex Affection Disorder.
The issue of the treatment of the “mentally ill” has many different pieces.
Blaming Szasz for bad policy-making is a cheap shot at best—slander at worst.
In my younger days (many decades ago) I had the “opportunity” to volunteer at one of those large mental institutions.
The “patients” were of many different types.
Probably 10% or so were what we see today on the street as “homeless”.
Many were criminals who had good lawyers that had used the mental illness defense to keep them out of jail.
Some had issues with their families and were dumped into the facilities as revenge, some where families honestly believed they were going good.
Some had true brain damage and they were just being warehoused.
Keeping all these folks in the same place made no sense.
The drugs (and other treatments) used were often inappropriate, in some cases inhumane.
That said, dumping them in the public square was not the only available alternative.
The poster child for the “profession” descended from the quackery of Sigmund Fraud.

Been there. And watched the dismantling. And know that not every state treated the different needs the same. The abuse and death the vulnerable populations are experiencing now....and have experienced under for the last 40 years is criminal. Szaz was a centerpiece. I knew the attorneys and judges. They were following the model California plan.

No, she’s alarmed by it.
However, in the present decadent phase of Western Civilization, truth, truth for its own sake, a foundation of Western Civilization, is held in contempt, and there is widespread promotion and acceptance of the ridiculous notion that gender dysphoria is perfectly healthy.
One wonders what will be the next foolishness to sweep the mass groupthink zeitgeist.
