Amid Outrage Over China's Zero Covid Strategy, A Warning From Xi Jinping

Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping issued the strongest warning yet against anyone who questions the country's zero-Covid policy.

The move comes after many Shanghai residents have taken to social media to call for help and vent their anger over severe food shortages and lack of access to medical care over the past five weeks, reported CNN.

At a meeting chaired by Xi on Thursday, the ruling Communist Party's supreme Politburo Standing Committee vowed to "unswervingly adhere to the general policy of 'dynamic zero-Covid,' and resolutely fight against any words and acts that distort, doubt or deny our country's epidemic prevention policies."

This is the first time Xi, who according to state media made an "important speech" at the meeting, has made public remarks about China's battle against Covid since public furore erupted over the harsh lockdown in Shanghai.

But the latest statement from the country's top leaders has made it clear that the Chinese government is doubling down on its approach of relying on swift lockdowns, mass testing and quarantine to squash the highly transmissible Omicron variant for the foreseeable future, reported CNN.

Xi has put his personal stamp on China's zero-Covid strategy, with state media often reporting that he has "personally commanded and made arrangements" for the country's fight against the pandemic.

To analysts who have long observed Chinese politics, the stern warning is a sign that there has been internal pushback against Xi's zero-Covid policy from within the party, reported CNN.

Okay, Xi is evil but I always had him pegged as a pragmatist. Yet his zero Covid policy is absurd. A shutdown of Shanghai over the Omicron variant which is about like getting a head cold? In the meantime the inevitable failure of such a policy risks his position as leader of China.

I watched a YouTube channel that specializes in China that explained that since Xi had already committed himself to the zero Covid policy, that any change to that would mean a loss of face for him. Is losing face in China that horrible that he risks it all to maintain an incredibly DUMB policy. Might as well have a zero cold policy and shut down your main city because somebody there might have a cold.

Interesting post PJ. It sounds like you know more about China than I do but is it possible that Xi/CCP is testing the latest and greatest strain on the local population before unleashing it upon us.
It’s interesting that Biden and his minions are warning of a Fall surge of cases in America.

My experience tells me that the latest variant spreading right now isincredibly contagious and even having Omicron a few months ago offers no immunity. Seems like the variants are just going to keep coming and being previously infected or vaccinated means next to nothing. It’s really sad that we don’t have one leader on the right that would stand up and make the case that Ivermectin should be available on every street corner.
