Marine animals could die off at a level rivaling the biggest mass extinctions in geologic history if people don’t curb greenhouse gas emissions.
That’s the takeaway from a study published Thursday in the journal Science, which found that many ocean creatures could face conditions too warm and with too little oxygen to survive if we don't turn things around. The more warming, the fewer species are likely to survive, the results show.
The new analysis applies what the research team previously learned about the "Great Dying" 252 million years ago — when more than two-thirds of all marine life in the Permian Period went extinct — as well as other historic extinctions to today’s climate projections. Under a high emissions scenario, the results were disturbing.
The new models suggest Earth could approach Permian levels of marine extinction by 2300 if emissions continue to increase.
Previous work from the team behind the new analysis revealed runaway global warming and a loss of oxygen in the ocean to be the causes of the Great Dying. Their model’s results matched patterns paleontologists had observed in Permian fossil records, giving it credibility.
Scientists knew from prior studies of fossilized teeth that surface temperatures during this period soared about 10 degrees Celsius in the tropics, leading many sea animals to go extinct. The researchers suspected volcanic eruptions triggered the changes, so they modeled those conditions.

“Marine animals could....”
Any purported news story with the verb “could” in it is not news, and therefore not worth reading past the word “could.”
But, this is what the mainstream media does. All the time. They are not news media, and have not been for a long time.
At least they had the good sense to move their projected doomsday 280 years into the future, so they won’t be proven wrong during their lifetimes.
If Nature wants Extinction, it will make everything extinct when its ready. Nature has done just that 5 times over the past 4.54 billion years according to the Scientists.
More democrat 🐂💩!
Have the tried placing corks on the cows?
Now would be a good time to insert a Hannity tik-tok.
Have they explained how CO2 traps heat? Greenhouse gasses sounds alot like Peak Oil and Fossil Fuels, neither of which actually exist.
Really. How is it even conceivable that a drunken, meth addled, skid row homeless person would have the desire to mount Whoppie Goldberg? I mean this guy Danson is a millionaire and famous. Even though he is demonstrably an as#hole, he must also be insane.
It’s crazy. I can’t imagine choosing that.(or “saluting” that…)
If I was rich and famous, I would be like DiCaprio…

Yeah, yeah. We’ve heard that before.
In 1910, the world was supposed to have a great extinction of life when we passed through the tail of Haley’s Comet.
Some people even committed suicide rather than die in the “die-off” which never happened.

There’s that word again. “Could.” If my dog had wheels, he “could” be a wagon.
In 1980 we heard about Voodoo Economics. Now we have Voodoo Science.
Here’s an excellent, oldie but goodie thread, reminding us of all of the

CO2 has been much higher than now expected to get and when that was the case ocean life was thriving, not extinct.
LIFE will adapt. Species that can adapt will thrive and species that can’t will not, and though the proportions of the mix of species in the oceans will change, LIFE in the oceans writ large will not die.
The one failure the alarmists is their refusal to acknowlegde our own immense abilities to adapt. We are one of the few species of life now inhabiting, to some degree, nearly every temperature ramnge on the planet. We did not reach that status by failing to adapt to “climate change”.
Die off in mass extinction if emissions remain high
Looks like we have to start feeding them Gasx
Opinion! I have one too, this is BS.
Hmmmm..... Revelations 16:4 come to mind.
Bigger threats are plastics, pharmaceuticals, sunscreens and chemicals
