The flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet, the Moskva missile cruiser, was badly damaged when ammunition on board blew up, Interfax news agency quoted the defense ministry as saying on Thursday.
Interfax said the crew had been evacuated. It blamed the blast on a fire and said the cause was being investigated.
A Ukrainian official earlier said the Moskva had been hit by two missiles but did not give any evidence. The 12,500 tonne ship has a crew of around 500.

“Hold my vodka and watch this, Ivan”
neither a missile strike nor blowing themselves up is a good look for the russkie navy ...
Next the Russians will say it collided with an iceberg.
Either way, Russia had only one option.
There’s no way they would admit to being hit. They could not
allow it to look like the Ukraine surprised and hurt them that
much in an attack.
It doesn’t matter to me which way it happened. It did, and
that’s not going to look good back home.
At some point, people are going to start having to face the
fact none of this negative stuff would have happened if
Putin had not invaded the Ukraine.
What are the chances that the Ukrainians didn’t cause the blast, but learned about it and then claimed a successful missile strike - before Russia even confirmed the story? Seems unlikely, although I suppose it’s possible. If it’s sufficiently unlikely, then it’s more likely that they knew about it because they successfully hit the ship with their missiles.
The “Victory at Sea” series shows some very impressive secondary explosions from ships hit in the Pacific in WW2. But there was no doubt that they are secondary explosions.
Not guessing one way or another.
Ammo blast caused be missle strike
“He’s dead, Jim.”
“Heroic cruiser Moskva has been promoted to submarine.”

This.
Putin thought this war would be over in a week. All his Generals told him so. All his spies told him so. They also all told him his military was in great shape, all the equipment well maintained, and the troops in fighting trim.
It was all lies. Putin will be lucky to escape with his life.

Ukrainian Solder bodies caused the engine coolant intake to clogged sparking a fire that ignited the ammo, that’s how you spin it boyo
“Heroic cruiser Moskva has been promoted to submarine.”
I guess they can now call it the “Kursk 2”
It seems like the Russian military last completed comprehensive maintenance and safety checks a century ago.
So many missiles on deck, how can you miss.
Not to mention both Sweden and Finland stating their intention to join NATO. That alone would normally be considered a foreign policy disaster for Russia.

“A Russian source is saying the Moskva has sunk and that the explosion was from a Ukrainian Neptun missile strike. Apparently, Ukraine flew a TB2 UCAV to distract the ship while it was targeted by the Neptun. The ship rolled onto its side after the strike.”
No more dominating for the Moskva.
I don’t think either had big plans to join NATO even a few
years back.
When Putin when in the first time, it was seen as very
problematic.
Now he’s done it again.
People like to talk about how bad Russia has had it in former
wars. What they ignore is that European nations have seen
this same song and dance before, and it generally precedes
worse things just ahead.
I agree with you.
