Elon Musk’s decision to reject a seat on Twitter’s board of directors could set up a “Game of Thrones”-style battle over the social media platform’s future in the coming days, according to a prominent analyst.
Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal said Musk backed out of an agreement to take a board seat on Saturday, the same day his appointment was set to become official.
The reversal likely stemmed from a dispute between Musk and Twitter over how the billionaire could discuss the company’s activities in public — and more trouble lies ahead, according to Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives.
“This now goes from a Cinderella story with Musk joining the Twitter board and keeping his stake under 14.9% helping move Twitter strategically forward to likely a ‘Game of Thrones’ battle between Musk and Twitter with the high likelihood that Elon takes a more hostile stance towards Twitter and further builds his active stake in the company,” Ives said in a note to investors.
Musk, who is Twitter’s largest individual shareholder following his acquisition of a roughly 9% stake in the company, would have been prevented from acquiring more than 14.9% of the company had he joined the board, Ives noted.
By reneging on the agreement, Musk is no longer subject to that limit – meaning he can acquire even more influence by snapping up more shares.
The announcement came after Musk spent the weekend critiquing Twitter on his account, suggesting the platform might be “dying” and posting a now-deleted poll asking if the company should change its name.

I'd say he wanted to KNOW absolutely...and found out...it could do more and acquire more if he was NOT a Board Member. I think he beat them at their own game.
We shall see...He's got something in mind for sure.
You are going to ban a 9.2% owner, the biggest individual shareholder and the richest man in the world?
How do you think that will work out?
And just why would he do that?
Bfl

May I ask what forms of retribution Musk may have if they cancel him? Why should the balance of Twatter care when their core values of leftism and censorship are at stake?
Then he buys another 42% of Twitter giving him over 50% and control of Twitter, kicks out the crazy Indian and his far left cohorts and brings free speech to Twitter.
How will the “Dem way” work out then?
Musk takes over Twitter, which is really not worth much and kicks out the left wing lunatics?
Why should the balance of Twatter care when their core values of leftism and censorship are at stake?
How many shares do Agrawal and his far left crazies own?
Until Musk owns the place, I see no reason he would not be at their mercy just like everyone else.
A publicly traded platform like Twatter should be *required* to maintain a cesspool of free speech; a nice punch bowl of verbiage, turds and all, just like public schools should be required to permit every kind of teaching. Hence, as it turns out, publicly owned entities are by nature mediocre at best.
I prefer the excellence found in privately owned, moderated speech forums like this one, zots and all.
Musk owns only 20% of Tesla, and sill totally controls the company.
And Musk is not “everyone else”. He owns 9.2% of the company Twitter, is the richest man by far on the planet, the world's greatest entrepreneur and has the wherewithal to take over Twitter whenever he wants. He can and will strike back if necessarily.
I get that, but from a simply practical, functional perspective, is he not subject to censorship in this platform? Are there not elements holding a different stake who see nothing to loose in silencing Musk?
Because he can.
Of course there are.
Plenty of Kamikaze far left crazies working in censorship department of Twitter who are eager to strap on suicide vests and bow everything up and damn the consequences.
Fortunately, those people don't control the world . The world doesn't work that way.
Elon Musk: “I hated the company so much that i bought it!”
Musk actually generates more activity on his Twitter handle than almost everyone else.
He just doesn’t like the censorship as he made clear before he bought shares in the company.
How exactly is cashing in and making money against Elon Musk’s self interest?
And it is nice to see very wealthy people enter the fray for freedom.

Musk is not only “very wealth”, he’s the wealthiest person in the world and on track to be the first trillionaire.
Musk LOVES trolling on Twitter, he had a poll asking about turning Twitter HQ into homeless shelter, Bezos chimed in and LOVES the idea, needless to say you know the CEO at Twitter head is exploding, gotta love this guy, he is like a BIG CAT with a new mouse to play with!!!
