ELCA church calls for trans bishop to resign over allegations of racism, other issues

A California congregation with a sizable LGBT membership that belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has called for the removal of the denomination’s first trans-identified bishop.

The Rev. Megan Rohrer, who uses “they/them” pronouns, was installed as the first trans-identified bishop in ELCA history last September, becoming the leader of the California-based ELCA Sierra Pacific Synod.

However, since then, Rohrer has weathered controversy over allegations of racist behavior toward a Hispanic Lutheran pastor, as well as other issues that have led some to call for Rohrer’s removal.

The Congregation Council of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, a Fresno-based ELCA congregation that reports having about 50% LGBT membership, passed a resolution on March 22 calling for the removal of both Rohrer and the Synod Council.

Approved by a unanimous vote, the resolution petitioned the ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, the Conference of Bishops, and other leaders to begin the process of removing Rohrer and the Synod Council from power.

I probably know more of its foibles than you do. I have an MS and history was my minor. The Medieval Christisn church produced all current Christian sects. At least their heart was in the right place - aside from the Inquisition and crusades against “heretics”

Migrate your entire church into to the LCMS. Your pastor can take some courses, become admitted to the LCMS ministerial, and begin to preach Luther's Small Catechism.

Well, I’ve been a Lutheran my entire life. I believe in the Lutheran way of worship, for lack of a better word” as Martin Luther founded the church on. Either you don’t have a church or faith or belong to a non-denominational church. The Methodist church is getting ready to split due to just this type of situation. If this happens to the ELCA, we will split off. We basically average 25-30 people a week. We all believe the same way, ironically, EXCEPT the Pastor and his wife on “social issues”. He keeps his mouth shut but his wife does voice her opinion occasionally. It seems that our last four Pastors are Liberal Democrats and they know just where I stand. We cant afford a full time Pastir, we have retired Pastors who lead our worship and we take care of everything else. Just about every denomination has it’s issues, unless of course your non-denominational. But I don’t get in to the “Brother Bob or Sister Susie “ and all of the Amening.

Regards

Since you don’t like the ELCA, have you been to an LCMC or NALC church? The ELCA probably won’t split, again, because of a lot of conservatives joined those groups.

You wrote a sincere response to my accusation-disguised-as-a-question, so I feel obligated to reply:

I don't understand much of your response, since you touch upon things and apparently assume that I'll instantly grasp the deeper meaning and implications, which I don't. I lack the specific background and/or life experience to deduce what it means to be a Lutheran and have a Liberal Democrat pastor and vocal pastor's wife.

My immediate impulse would be to suggest that you a. Stage a strike and threaten to leave en masse; b. Go to your pastor - and his superior - with a strong delegation of a dozen or so parishioners for a serious talk, "Nice little church you got here, Your Eminence... Wouldn't want anything to happen to it..."; c. If it is already intolerable to you - if your pastor is already talking about a "non-binary" God or what-have-you: Find a new church.

Okay, option "b" is meant to generate a little levity - but the sentiment remains: You've got to get their attention and make it clear that you are serious!

To sum it up: I suspect that you are being too long-suffering and/or "tolerant."

After all: We are talking about the condition of your everlasting soul here, aren't we?

I think that you need a greater sense of urgency: Maybe you should try imagining a twelve-year-old son or grandson attending religious instruction with this pastor, and then "getting wind" that the pastor has encouraged him to "cross-dress" as a way of getting "closer to Christ" or some-such nonsense.

Looks to me like it's already gotten to the point that you parishioners should be fetching your torches and pitchforks. And maybe you, southernindymom should be personally leading the way!

Regards,

Missouri Synod around us do not allow Non-Missouri Synod members to participate in communion. We don’t agree with that belief. In doing this, they would deny Christ communion because he was Jewish and didn’t belong to the Missouri Synod. There are no NALC churches in our region.

My church is more than just the place I go on Sunday. The members are family to me. We are in a very small community and I will never leave this church. Every religion has an issue. I go to church to worship God. I spread the word and love of God to the people around me. I can’t change what the ELCA is doing, no more than I can change the Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, Mormans, etc. Everyone will have to answer to God when they die and the leaders of these Synods will have to answer to. You may think that that is terrible. I don’t agree with what they are doing and when the voting happened several years ago, our church and many in the Synod voted against it. We were out voted. As we all know, they and every church is looking for the money...... We continue to minister in our small community as God intended. Again, they will answer for their decisions at some point.

I know that the majority of Missouri Synod churches don’t allow non-Missouri Synod members to have communion, there. I didn’t mention LCMS. I said LCMC, which is Lutheran Congregations for Mission in Christ. I’m glad that you like many members of your church.
