Biden blames COVID AND Putin for soaring gas prices, admits it's 'hard to tell' when they will go down and says Americans will save $80 a month if they buy an electric car as he unveils plan to reduce pain at the pumps

President Joe Biden said Thursday that record gas prices were caused by the pandemic and Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine as he unveiled a two-pronged plan to increase supply and reduce demand.

He announced he would release a million barrels of oil per day from the nation's strategic reserve for the next six months and accelerate the switch to electric vehicle.

But his analysis of the cause of the crisis will attract criticism for opponents who accuse him of shifting the blame for his administration's economic woes.

'The problem we're facing with gas prices has two roots,' Biden told reporters at the White House.

'First, the pandemic. When COVID struck demand for oil plummeted so production slowed down worldwide.

'Because of the strength and the speed of recovery demand for oil shot back up much faster than the supply. That's why the cost of gas began to rise last year.

'The second root is Vladimir Putin.'

At the start of the year the price of a gallon was about about $3.30, he continued, while today it is averaging about $4.22.

Trying to figure out how do I save $80 a month by buying an electric car. I do not have any car payments now.

Tesla Model 3 starts out at $46K. If I put 10K down and finance the car loan of 36K at 2.29% for 60 months, my car payments would be $635.57. Not much of a savings.

Biden is very disconnected from the average American. Who is going to take on another debt when they could be unemployed in a year?

It was Joe’s policies that created this mess. Time to buckle up and prepare for tough times.

First, you have to have the 40 Grand to pay for the electric car. Seeing as you’re saving $80 a month,it will only take you almost 42 years to break even.

“could charge different prices for “Off Peak” pricing. “

A benefit of battery powered things is that you’re likely to be able to charge them during off-peak hours.

Regarding Biden blaming high gas prices partly on Covid, I used a lot less gas for over a year when I worked at home.

> There is no good economics in buying an electric car. This is especially so for the average wage earner who doesn’t have lots of tax deductions and a personal accountant.

> If a person owns a serviceable gas powered car, it’s better to keep it in good repair than to buy a new one.

In liberal circles, this is regarded as an urgent problem, not a viable solution.

:-( :-(

“says Americans will save $80 a month if they buy an electric car”

Sure, I’ll go spend a bunch of money to buy an electric car that I can’t charge anywhere. Great solution.

Whether or not an EV is worth it depends on many variables:

EV vs gas car
miles per kWh vs mpg
cost per kWh from power company vs cost per gallon of gas
What kind of gas car is the EV comparing against? (I.e. if you're like me you haven't made a car payment in years because it's much more affordable for me to replace my old used car with another used car, so mind and my wife's current gas cars get not-so-great mpg, but no car payments either, but I expect to replace her car in a year or two anyway, so I'm expecting to pay $8K to $10K to replace it with another used gas car unless we get an EV. With that in mind, a $40K EV "feels" like only $30K compared to buying another used gas car.)

That's not even getting into things like if you plan to take many long trips per year in it because you're retired (in which case charging on the road is more expensive than charging at home) or if virtually all of your charging is at home (in which case charging costs are based on how much you pay your power company per kWh and how many miles the EV will get per kWh).

I crunched the numbers and an EV is affordable for me for one reason only: I have a large solar system and could probably charge it for free about 30% of the miles I drive. If it wasn't for that, an EV probably would barely be on the threshold of being worth it -- not worth the risk of buying one and hope the whole EV thing isn't just a bad fad.

Biden is very disconnected from the average American.

You're talking about someone who was elected to Congress at the ripe old age of 29 (!! 29 !!) and has sucked off the public teat ever since. (What the h**l were people in Delaware thinking?!?) He has no conception of how to run a business or even how to manage a household on a budget. He's not only disconnected from the average American, he's disconnected from ANYONE who has to earn their own way in the world.

Like everything else, they work for some folks and not so much for other folks. We happen to be other folks. And also “NON GMO”.

We aint gonna make it 2 and a half years.

It’ll be over with by the end of this year.

I expect there will be a general serious civil unrest start all over the country...I.E food riots resulting in general killings.

Save $80? I bought 30 buffalo wings for a small gathering and it was nearly $40. If his solution is to shell out $50K for a Tesla so I can save $80 a month, well that’s waaay more “let them eat cake” than Obama saying to inflate your tires the last time gas soared in the USA.
