The Canakkale Bridge is now the world’s longest suspension bridge

The president of Turkey, South Korea’s prime minister and other officials inaugurated a massive suspension bridge Friday over the Dardanelles Strait that connects the European and Asian shores of the key waterway.

With a a 2,023-meter (6,637 feet) span between its towers, the “1915 Canakkale Bridge” becomes the world’s longest suspension bridge, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

It connects the town of Gelibolu, located in the European side of Turkey’s northwestern province of Canakkale, with the town of Lapseki on the Asian side.

The bridge allows travelers to cross the Dardanelles — which connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara — in just six minutes compared to the previous 1 1/2 hours by ferry, the president said.

“Turkey has overtaken Japan, which has the longest bridge in the world in terms of the midspan, and has taken the first place,” Erdogan said during the inauguration ceremony.

The inauguration was timed to coincide with the 107th anniversary of Turkey’s World War I naval victory over a joint British and French fleet attacking the Dardanelles. The failure of the naval campaign led to the ill-fated 1915 landings on the Gallipoli peninsula by the allies led by Britain and France along with troops from Australia and New Zealand.

Something about that name brings to mind Hillary Clinton.

But the pride remains. I’m surprised (well, noting with interest, that the 1915 Dardenelles naval battle, the Gallipoli defeat remain 100+ years later a Turkish victory worth remembering.

That is awesome. I have taken many a trips across the Dardanelles to work in the city of Cannakale. The last time I was in Turkey I saw the foundations being built for this bridge. Those ferry boat rides are an adventure. Years ago I stayed at the Antafartalar hotel at the ferry boat landing and used to sit on my balcony and watch the fights as people would try to get on the ferry boar with their vehicle. They have since leveled the hotel… now a bridge. Times change.

WOW that is lot more than a mile between the towers.
Those steel ropes would stretch quite a bit with that span.

More than 1 mile between the towers! Glad you have visited that area. My list of European countries visited includes England, France, Italy, Portugal, Monaco, Sweden, & Czech republic.

Putin will now want to build a bridge to connect Russia with its long lost province of Alaska.

Bridge length is commonly measured by how many times you can whistle through the “Bridge on the River Kwai” tune as you step lively from end to end.

Thanks RACPE. Not sure it was much of a victory for the Turks, but the British and French didn’t accomplish their objective — unless that objective was to feed their troops into the guns of the “soft underbelly of Europe”. Memory of the WWI losses led WWII Britain to delay delay delay a second front in France, while getting us to fight for restoration of their North African holdings, then resume the “soft underbelly” horse****.
