Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have accepted that his country will not become a member of NATO, one of the demands made by Russia before it invaded.
According to a translation of his comments in a speech, Zelensky said that Ukraine had "realized" it would not become part of the Western military alliance.
"For years we've heard the opposite, open doors, However, it is not," he said Tuesday according to Ukrainian news outlet, Trukha.
"Our people understand this, and we are beginning to count on our own strength," he added.

Putin’s interest in Ukraine has many factors. But, one big reason may be Ukraine’s geographical position: Ukraine borders Russia on one side and NATO nations on the other, and Ukraine is situated along a sea route. If Ukraine joins NATO, then a NATO nation would share a long border with Russia.
Meanwhile, the U.S. VP who had a “special” relationship with Ukraine is POTUS now. Putin despises the U.S. and its influence in Europe. Now he sees a weak POTUS who likes to blame Russia for things with no evidence whatsoever. So, Putin made his move.
I’m convinced this invasion would not have happened if Trump were in office.
Maybe those smaller countries will be next on Putin’s list...
There are other factors behind Putin’s interest in Ukraine, but geography must be a major one.
“Maybe those smaller countries will be next on Putin’s list...”
Well, THEY think so. They are afraid they are a far easier target than, say, Poland. They wanted into NATO for specifically this reason: They had lived under the Russian yoke and wanted to make sure they never did again.
“Europe will forgive and forget. Oil. Russia wins twice. They keep Ukraine and we get out.”
Until that agreement gets revised—like ALL the others!
Russia is a nuclear power. They’re not afraid of getting invaded. Stories of the Western Eurasian Steppe being an invasion route are from the time when armies moved on horses and needed fodder.
He actually did.
RIGHGT before the invasion.
But not Nearly in such definitive terms.
This war wouldn’t have happened under Trump because he would have seen the insanity of letting Ukraine into NATO.
Or maybe not..i dunno what his stance was.
But I do know that NATO has become the Costco of treaty alliances
If you have 35 dollars, you can get in :)
I’m not sure what Costco costs for a year. just made the number up :)
Putin is too stupid to get out of Ukraine.
This should be over, but Ukraine will continue to kick Russian armored azz.
Not getting out means an insurgency that will be 10 times as bad as the invasion.
Russia has a naval base in Crimea where it may still keep nuclear warheads. The Black Sea is an important sea route for Russia.
NATO is America's puppet. Its purpose is to facilitate the American occupation and dominance over Europe.
Its two main founding goals were to prevent Germany from rearming, and to contain Soviet Communism.
Yes, NATO has outlived its purpose. It should have been shut down after the Soviet Union broke apart, and we should have pursued friendship with Russia.
Judging by the snippet of the article here, the headline does not match his comment. His comment isn’t that Ukraine won’t join NATO, it sounds more like he is saying NATO has actually been stringing Ukraine along letting them hope they would be admitted but in fact it has not and will not allow it, out of fear of Russia..
His point is less a promise that Ukraine will not join NATO, but rather a recognition that NATO will not extend an invitation anytime in the foreseeable future, which is almost certainly true. However, he's still insisting on Ukraine's right to get bilateral/multilateral security guarantees with other nations - just not under the "NATO" label.
Exactly.
