BREAKING: Volodymyr Zelensky Says Ukraine Won't Join NATO
Newsweek ^ | 3/15/22 AT 10:28 AM EDT | BRENDAN COLE

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have accepted that his country will not become a member of NATO, one of the demands made by Russia before it invaded.

According to a translation of his comments in a speech, Zelensky said that Ukraine had "realized" it would not become part of the Western military alliance.

"For years we've heard the opposite, open doors, However, it is not," he said Tuesday according to Ukrainian news outlet, Trukha.

"Our people understand this, and we are beginning to count on our own strength," he added.

“Putin attacked Ukraine to show Ukraine that it could never rely on NATO.”

That makes no sense at all. Ukraine is not a NATO member; so why would Ukraine be expected to rely on it? Reliance implies an enforceable obligation, and that is absent.

I think Ukraine should continue on as the piggy bank for corrupt politicians. It’s worked out well for them.

That twitter comment is pure horse puckey. Russia is the aggressor. As corrupt as Ukraine is, lets not forget who invaded who here.

Above all else right now, NATO, EU, and CSTO rules don't allow a country at war to join.

That means if Ukraine was accepted into NATO World War III would start immediately.

Everyone understands that, right?

No, but Ukraine has shown interest in joining NATO, and NATO nations have been friendly with Ukraine.

I'm not defending Putin. What he has done is terrible. Just trying to figure Putin out...

With the attack on Ukraine, Putin seems to be sending a message and testing the waters:

He's showing Ukraine: "You want to join NATO? Watch how your western friends fear Russia and will not help you defend Ukraine against Russia."

He's sending a message to NATO: "Think twice before inviting Ukraine to join NATO. Do you really want to go to war against Russia?"

He's also testing the waters: He sees a weak U.S. president and watched a botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. How much can he get away with doing?

In other words, give Putin everything he really wanted in the first place, and so reward his aggression. But thanks to the pre-invasion bumbling by Biden and NATO, Ukraine might have to do exactly that.

As opposed to doing what?

Putin first invaded Ukraine in 2014 when Ukraine wasn’t pursuing NATO membership and it wasn’t even popular. The polls from 2012 showed only ~20% of Ukrainians supported joining NATO.

Of course the popularity went up AFTER Russia invaded them.

Ukrainians used to be very naive. Years of Soviet brainwashing had accomplished that they were worried about the US invading them not Russia.

That secret is listening to what Putin says.

He says that the collapse of the USSR was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century and he wants to reverse it.

That has been consistent with Putin since his 2007 Munich speech. That was Putin bold from the high oil prices and no longer feeling he needs to hide that he is a KGB through and through.

All this muddling about NATO or Jews or Nazis or Biolabs is just throwing red meat to the western “Blame America First” voices or conspiracists.

By now, Putin must be well aware of this, too. So apprehension that Ukraine might join NATO is a BS rationale for this war. Might as well go to war because Zelenskyy’s kid’s been accepted to the Hogwarts Harry Potter Fan Club after he sent in five box-tops. He wants to restore the Soviet Union, and if he should conquer Ukraine, Moldavia will be next, and after that Estonia and Lithuania, both of which are now part of NATO, but used to be Soviet Republics. Then we’ll see if Article Five means Jack.

If Brandon is worried about WW III, helping give Ukraine a fighting chance in the air is how you prevent it. Rope-a-dope Russia in Ukraine with a few airplanes, anti-missile batteries, Stingers and the like, and his ground troops remain stuck in the morass as he squanders his country’s credit, moral credibility, and resources on an anti-Quixotic impossible nightmare, tilting at the windmill of time and progress. He’ll fall like Forman did to Ali back in the day, from sheer exhaustion.

Talk about mixing metaphors.

But the new $1.5 trillion Federal spending bill just passed imposes NEW GUN CONTROL on the United States, including deputizing state and local police to punish those 99 percent who are innocent, but fail the NICS check for gun buying, because of poor Federal recordkeeping. “With the attack on Ukraine, Putin seems to be sending a message and testing the waters: He’s showing Ukraine: ‘You want to join NATO? Watch how your western friends fear Russia and will not help you defend Ukraine against Russia.’
He’s sending a message to NATO: ‘Think twice before inviting Ukraine to join NATO. Do you really want to go to war against Russia?’”

Then why didn’t Putin attack Latvia, or Estonia (both of which border Russia)? Or Lithuania? Or former Soviet satellite states Romania, or Bulgaria, or Slovenia, or Slovakia? None of them joined NATO until 2004. Putin was president from 2000 - 2008; and 2012 - the present. Between 2008 and 2012 he was Premier (really, he was acting president, as Medvedev was his placeholder).

I think your last comment is most likely the real reason: He’s testing the waters; he sees a weak U.S. president and watched a botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. How much can he get away with doing?

Sure Biden. Your just like him and his ilk. I wouldn’t trust your type to hit any battlefield. There is a streak down some back sides like yours that covers it. Go away.

Then why didn’t Putin attack Latvia, or Estonia (both of which border Russia)? Or Lithuania?

Ukraine shares a longer border with Russia, and the country is situated along a sea route.

Plus, other factors are in play.

“Ukraine shares a longer border with Russia, and the country is situated along a sea route.”

So are Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. There is a reason they are called the Baltic States (i.e., all three are on the Baltic Sea).
