President Joe Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday that any attack against NATO could spark World War III.
The president spoke about the conflict at a House Democrat retreat in Philadelphia, vowing again to defend “every inch” of NATO territory from Putin and the Russians.

I think it is probably just that simple.
everything is about domestic politics. I look always at the late roman republic. starting a major war to crush a domestic rival or consolidate power would be perfectly reasonable.
the administration knows they will lose congress in november, therefore any measures necessary to prevent that are acceptable. a war with some nasty damage could very well simply prevent elections.
Putin’s not going after Europe or NATO. I think this is a case where things are exactly what they appear to be. Putin said that he wouldn’t tolerate Ukraine becoming part of a western bloc, so he’s taking control to make sure that never happens. Doesn’t make it right, of course, but he’s not planning to invade the West, especially after the dismal performance of his military.
