Putin's invasion grinds to a halt: Kyiv claims to have destroyed dozens of Russian helicopters overnight, retaken a city, and killed 11,000 troops while Russians have captured no significant territory sparking hopes Ukraine could win the war

Russia's invasion of Ukraine appears to have ground to a halt with no significant territory captured despite a weekend of heavy fighting, with Kyiv's men claiming to have taken out dozens of helicopters and recaptured a city this morning - sparking hopes that the unlikeliest of victories may be on the cards.

Putin's men renewed their bombardments on Mariupol, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv this morning as his forces also tried to surround Kyiv in preparation for an assault, but have not significantly advanced their frontline since the city of Kherson and nuclear power plant at Zaporizhzhia were captured last week.

Meanwhile the Ukrainian armed forces claimed to have destroyed up to 30 Russian helicopters that had been moved to Chornobaivka airport, near Kherson, overnight and to have retaken the city of Chuhuiv, near Kharkiv, killing two Russian commanders - Lt. Col. Dmitry Safronov, and Lt Col. Denis Glebov - in the process.

Russia also tacitly acknowledged the loss of two other commanders - Colonel Konstantin Zizevsky and Lieutenant Colonel Denis Glebov - whose funerals were held in Russia at the weekend.

Video also emerged which appeared to show Ukrainian defence forces based in Odessa, the country's largest port, exchanging fire with ships overnight - one of which suffers a hit. Ukraine's ministry of defence has since claimed the vessel was destroyed.

-snip-

US intelligence believes Russia has committed 95 per cent of the invasion force it had assembled on Ukraine's border to the fight, meaning significant reinforcements to push its attacks forward are unlikely to come soon - and could simply run into many of the same logistical problems that plagued the early assault.

Hey, troll-boi.

Can we just stop with shi'te like this?

Make your point, argue with facts.

That used to be the Free Republic way, and you'd get banned for that kind of talk.

I'm really getting tired of the FReeper on FReeper insults, it hasn't been this bad since the Trump/Cruz wars in 2015/6.

This applies to both sides.

Let's show some decorum. You're better than that!

You're not looking at a map. Think 200K troops spread out over the territory they "occupy."

Then think of small, mobile Ukrainian units, arms caches everywhere, etc., plus bad Russian logistics, ill maintained equipment, untrained Russian soldiers and an air force without precision munitions and a low sortie rate and bad maintenance.

Putin bought lots of pretty, new equipment with no support, spare parts and inadequate training. The Russians make advances, get bogged down, and then get picked off and knocked out.

They may not even be able to seize all the Black Sea areas.

Putin needs to make a $100 million debt payment on Russia’s sovereign debt on March 16 and Russia doesn’t have the money.

Default time.

Are they the primary Ukrainian force anymore? It must always have been rather small, given the small size of the total Ukrainian active military.
Ukraine has both mobilized its reservists and militia, and probably redeployed some of those units facing the Donets to, say, Kharkiv(Kharkov). I saw destroyed T-80s there, which probably were active force units, not reserves. The mass of effective Ukrainian forces can’t be on the Donets front anymore.
Its one thing to make a pocket, its another to catch anything in it. Very tricky timing.

Great questions—with the fog of war who knows.

Those who know aren’t talking, and those who are talking don’t know.

? There is nothing useful to anyone on the Russian side up there. And then there is the impossible logistics.

I agree, it will be a blockade strategy, daring the USN to come near Taiwan.

The concern is that our mighty CVN battle groups will be exposed as obsolete, similar with what happened to the British battleships easily sunk by Japanese land-based light bombers leaving Singapore in Dec 1941.

Our warships are in range of CCP missiles long before they can approach Taiwan. A CVN’s F-18s don’t have the range to cover Taiwan before the CVN is sunk.

Putin has already punted on wanting the entire Black Sea coast.

In the negotiations with Ukraine today, Putin now says he only wants:

1. Crimea for Russia (which he already has)

2. Independence for DPR and LPR. He doesn’t even get Mariupol.

All that, for no territory gains for Russia.

True. There arent really frontlines in this war as we think of them in WWII. Its a war of small columns, patrols and ambushes.

Trolls don’t listen to facts.

Trolls call everyone trying to look at the Ukraine objectively “Russian Bots” or “Putin fan-bois” or what have you.

And if you’d bothered to read past the first sentence, you’d have seen the facts.

Facts obvious enough everyone should have noticed at the begining.

Unlike past wars, Russia simply doesn’t have the demographics to throw bodies into the line of fire. Decades of communism has drastically and dangerously slowed its birth rate below replacement level. Anyway, in the past, they have used mostly Ukrainian and Baltic bodies to throw into the line of fire.

We won’t be getting the real truth for at least six months.

If ever.

Exactly so, but there wasn’t really much equipment that was new. Nearly all of it was reasonably well known.

True. Doubtless he was a gallant officer, and does not deserve a sloppy edit in a foreign newspaper.
