Does this “analysts” even know that one third to one half of the population in the Ukraine is Russian or favors Russia?
That east of Dnieper they constitute a majority of the population?
That thousands of new volunteers have already joined them.
That this could spiral into a bitter civil war?

I expect the media’s analysts to have no idea what is going on. Simply put, Russia is administering a thorough azzkickin’. Twitter expects everything to be happen within an hours’ time, like it is on live action TV shows. This is why they’re baffled, they’re stuck in “instant coffee” mode. But life rarely, if ever, works out that way.

There certainly are people in Ukraine who favor Russia, and a significant number of Russian speakers.
How many there are, and how many support the invasion is very unclear.
Many Russian speakers do not favor the invasion.
The fog of war is dense.
I suspect many Russians in Ukraine do not favor the invasion.

False. They are not Russian, they are Ukrainians who speak Russian. They may have been pro-Russia in 2014, but Putin’s invasion ended that.
It is Russian speaking Ukrainians who are fighting like devils in Kharkiv to keep their city out of Putin’s hands.

Putin will go nuclear before accepting defeat but he will win his war eventually without nuclear, with horrendous results for both Russia and Ukraine.

I agree that the media is clueless here. We don’t have good reports on the ground to follow events. Everyone except those there are really ignorant of the scope. Saying all that, it wasn’t in Russia interest to expose 50% of their entire military force in an operation that is this slow. Further, who bombs nuclear power plants and waste depots? How does this further your cause or your perception? No, there is alot of evidence to suggest that things aren’t going the way Putin wanted, even if overwhelming military might prevails.
And, like Communist China, and all Communist countries, Russians appear to be adverse to any level of preventative maintenance.
A military guy in charge of equipment in the USA did an analysis of an abandoned missile system the Russkies abandoned in Ukraine. He noted that the tires looked had blown out, and more of them blew out as the Ukrainians tried to tow it so they could put it to use.
According to him, this was clear evidence the Russkies had let the vehicle sit in one place for at least a year, without bothering to move it to prevent the degradation of the tires. He stated that when he was in the military, according to their training, the sun will degrade tires and make them brittle. Consequently, you needed to move the vehicle every so often, plus inspect and clean out the vehicle for any animals that may have taken up residence in its innerds (which reminds me, an old car of mine I let my half-brother have (I demote him to half-brother when thinking of what he did to this car) became infested and inoperable after he let it sit in his backyard for months, possibly up to a year, without bothering to move it. All the tires were flat too).
From the soldier's point of view, the state of the tires, and the apparent phenomena of mass abandonment of armor by the Russians, showed the Russkies were not performing preventative maintenance on their armor, and that the armor had probably been sitting out in the sun in one place for a year before it was put into operation.
He also stated these problems would get worse with mud, which is why the Russians are keeping to the roads and not driving in fields. The mud will tear up the tires even worse. This would not be a problem in the south of Ukraine, where the temperature is a little better and mud isn't an issue, hence why the phenomena of abandoned vehicles in the south doesn't seem to exist, and where the Russians have been making better gains than in other places of the country.

By Russia’s own admission they lost more soldiers in the first days than we did in two invasions of Iraq and one of Afghanistan combined.
And those reported figures are probably a quarter of the real one.
Good post. I'm surprised at the number of trolls that have infested FR who appear to cheer "The Misadventures Of Putin."
But, you're right. Putin has a "Soviet Union" mindset in a 21st century age. It's like me when I work out with weights like I did 20 years ago, viz. I don't get very far.
Sadly though, he still has the ability to inflict a tremendous amount of suffering and destruction. I guess his personal bodyguards are loyal to him. For now.

I think it's simply a case of the russians not knowing what the hell they're doing.
I do not see this as a ‘military’ action.
I do not see this as a ‘political’ reprisal.
This is purely a ‘tribal’ action.
For a length of history, the Ukraine belonged to Russia.
It was theirs to do with, both people and realty.
It was the tsar who seized the farmlands held by Jews in that land.
So now, a land of ‘freedom’ or not,Putin, in his desiring a legacy, is acting like an amoeba, absorbing Ukraine back under Russian rule and ownership.
