A fire has been seen at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine after tanks opened fire with heavy weapons at the facility, footage in the early hours of Friday morning showed.
A live feed from the Zaporizhzhia station showed flames at the site in the east of country, having earlier showed tanks firing at buildings - sparking fears of a radiation disaster in the nation currently being invaded by Russian forces.
Dmytro Orlov, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar, confirmed the blaze in an online post. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest of its kind in Europe.
'As a result of continuous enemy shelling of buildings and units of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire,' Orlov said on his Telegram channel, citing what he called a threat to world security.
Earlier, Ukrainian authorities reported Russian troops were stepping up efforts to seize the plant and had entered the town with tanks.
The shocking footage came after Ukrainian civilians defied Russian troops for a second day running in a bid to protect the nuclear plant. They were shown setting up make-shift road blocks in an attempt to block the road to the facility.
Both the Ukrainian state atomic energy company and Orlov said troops were nearing Zaporizhzhia. Officials said loud shots were heard in the city late Thursday.
'Many young men in athletic clothes and armed with Kalashnikov have come into the city. They are breaking down door and trying to get into the apartments of local residents,' the statement from Energoatom said.

The fire ant colony KILLS if it gets the chance. Relative threat assessment.
There's no question that Putin just implicitly and intentionally took this nuclear. He's made an unmistakeable gesture toward pushing the button.
We have to respond in kind lest he conclude we're really "not serious people" which will mean an immediate escalation of the war.
A serious man's response to this would be attacking that stalled convoy with NATO planes and if that doesn't work then sinking the entire Russian Navy.
Putin just took this thing nuclear. We must respond or we lose everything.
Your comments are absurd.
You are waving the word “nuclear” around like waving a red cape at a bull.
It is embarrassing.
If we respond with fear we're done.
You seem to want us not to respond to Putin's shelling the largest nuke plant in Europe. It seems to me that you're searching for some ego-saving way out - like the plant wasn't operational (never mind the large amount of dirty bomb materials stored there). The psychopathic mind of Vladimir Putin wants you to do violence to yourself - by lying to yourself - in order to avoid confronting the full import of his actions.
We must respond now.
Not that I think we will - all of our leaders are playing the same game of denial that you are.
You are in panic mode.
Step away from the keyboard and commune with nature for a while.
Once kgb/fsu always kgb/fsu...
Even more strange to me is...
(1) Soros is taking side with Ukraine
(2) Every DUmmy is taking side with Ukraine
(3) Every democrat is taking side with Ukraine.
(4) Every Neocon politician is taking side with Ukraine.
(5) Hillary kept accusing Trump of being a Russian agent.
That is enough for me to side with Russia, even if I really have not studied the history of conflict between these 2 countries.
So why are so many FReepers siding with Ukraine? Have they studied the history of the region?
Daily News is 💯 propaganda
(Except the stuff about the kardashians is true)
“Don’t be surprised if the Oligarch’s make that happen soon, for the mess Putin’s created.”
From your lips to God’s ears.
So here is another one that will be on the side of Mexico when they finally decide they have enough here to take over.
Can’t figure out why it is ok with some people for one country yo invade another. I suppose their history began the day they were born.
True, but a child can spot a fire ant colony, and make things a bit miserable momentarily with a garden hose.
My grandkids like to kick the top of the mound open and pour water down the holes. They don’t know that I use starting fluid ether, then lay dirt back on top the hole to seal it in. If it doesn’t get the entire colony, it is at least a major setback.
Ukraine is a Sovereign country.
Putin/Russia invaded a Sovereign country.
If you back the invasion of Sovereign countries and NATO continues to appear weak, you cannot be surprised when more countries are invaded.
As for me, I'm fundamentally opposed to the invasion of Sovereign countries when it's clear they don't pose a threat to the country invading them. Nothing more than that and nothing less.
Go ahead and ask me my opinions on Iraq and Afghanistan and the US Invasions of those countries. You'll find me to be remarkably consistent.
My guess without reading about it, is that the plant was scrammed in advance and is in a quiescent state not generating power or in danger of a runaway reaction.
And I don’t know about the strength of a reactor container from an outside hit, but I will bet pretty strong.
I am not as concerned as some, but it doesn’t mean bad things can’t happen. Hell, if they are like us, they probably have spent fuel laying all around outside the facility.
I guess I will go read the article and see how off base I am.
“Ukraine is a sovereign country.”
Well, sorta, kinda....
But—they agreed to be a warehouse for piles of NATO weapons...
So...
When you poke a bear with a stick, it is a little too clever to play innocent after it attacks you.
Since when does having NATO weapons revoke one's sovereignty?
AFAIC, the dumbest thing Ukraine did was give up their nuclear weapons.
“when does having NATO weapons revoke one’s sovereignty?”
It is just a risk factor—ya know, like the sovereign nation of Cuba accepting Soviet arms in 1959....
Then, stuff happens—and nobody should be surprised if there is a Bay of Pigs.
I cannot believe, even in Ukraine, with hostile armed troops advancing, that the plant would not be scrammed while it was still safe to do so.
I cannot believe they would be so idiotic as to have the control rods out of the cores and generating power as armed troops approached, even it it meant cutting off power to large populated areas.
Even they couldn’t be stupid enough to keep those things online as armed troops got within 20 miles.
You shut them down while you can.
Once you do that, and you have the rods inserted, there are two major worries: a direct hit that penetrates the containment vessel, or if you have fission byproducts hanging around, a hit on one of those turning an artillery shell into a dirty bomb.
You're seriously trying to connect what's happening in Ukraine today to Cuba in 1959?
Wow, that's desperate.
The similarities are very real—but it requires historical perspective—very difficult—might hurt your brain...
So why did Bush invade Iraq (a SOVERIGN country)
Why did US invade Vietnam?
Why did US invade Afghanistan?
Govt of Afghan did not send pilots to send in tall buildings.
Do you know history of Ukraine & Russia going back 300 years?
