Vladimir Putin wants to seize all of Ukraine and "worse is to come" during the conflict, the French president has warned.
Emmanuel Macron held talks with Mr Putin over the phone this afternoon in a bid to ease tensions between Russia and the West.
According to French officials, Mr Macron told the Russian leader that he was making a "major mistake" in Ukraine, adding: "You are lying to yourself".
Following the call, Mr Macron believes "worse is to come" in the unfolding humanitarian crisis and that Mr Putin wants to seize the entire country, according to an aide.

A couple of broken down vehicles is not going to hold up a Russian Mechanized Infantry Battalion for very long.
Ukraine is also highly rich in natural resources. This is nothing more than a naked land grab by someone who wants to reassemble the Soviet Union.
This won’t happen. The conflict is over Donbas.
Russia has neither the means nor interest in conquering other countries. They are tired of NATO trying to destroy them.
Let Russia put nukes on our border with Mexico and see what happens.

Well I too have been trying to hammer that point home. There is no such thing as conventional warfare between the US and Russia. That time passed in about 1949.
Russia will have no desire to waste time engaging in large scale slaughter with tanks and urban warfare. They had their fill of that at Kursk and Stalingrad. To send NATO against Russia means a nuclear exchange. Ukraine is not our fight, so yes, unfortunately the best course is to let the two warring parties settle it. If that means Russian expansion, that’s what must happen.
They could have had the Donbas. They could have negotiated a referendum in the non-Russian occupied Donbas long ago. I suspect they wouldn’t have gotten the expected result though.

Yes, Putin wants to recreate the Russian empire. But we can’t do much about the Ukraine today and he is openly calling for nuclear war.
Do you push him to start bombing now over a place most can’t find on map? Do you use the time to build up (because remember, China will cut us off once we start acting froggy and that means all the junk we live on stops)?

Nobody went to war in 1914 planning for what was an entirely random result. Thousands of random factors went into every stage of that extremely complex process. Even the end stage of the Bolshevik takeover hung on a long string of decision points that could have gone another way. Like if an assassins bullet had hit Lenin an inch to the left. One of many assassination attempts btw.
