We were in a hotel in Portugal a few years back. They had exit directions in Portuguese, French, English, and Italian. Not Spanish. LOL.

To be fair, that’s because most Spanish speakers can usually figure out Portuguese.

The Portuguese dont think much of the Spanish. As far as Portugal is concerned Spain was the “evil empire”. Funny thing is the Portuguese (and Brazilians) understand Spanish near perfectly, but the Spanish cant make out what the Portuguese are saying in that weird mush-mouthed pronunciation they’ve got. When we had Brazilian neighbors we would often speak (our kids were best of pals), me in Spanish, her in Portuguese, and so it was, I was straining my linguistic chops and she, of course, heard me perfectly.
