A new report released this week by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) looks at the causes, impacts and solutions to climate change.
The report gives the clearest indication to date of how a warmer world is affecting all living things on Earth.
Here are five things we learnt from it.
1- Things are way worse than we thought
From the melting of the Greenland ice sheet to the destruction of coral reefs, climate related impacts are hitting the world at the high end of what modellers once expected. And much more quickly than previously assessed by the IPCC.
2 - Loss and damage gets scientific backing
For several years, developing countries have been trying to get richer nations to take the idea of loss and damage seriously.
3 - Technology is not a silver bullet
According to the IPCC, the use of some technologies designed to limit warming or reduce CO2 could make matters worse rather than better.
4 - Cities offer hope
While large cities are hotspots for climate impacts, they also offer a real opportunity to avoid the worst impacts of warming.
5 - The small window is closing fast.
While this is a bleak assessment of the impacts now and in the future, the authors remain convinced that the worst impacts can be averted - if we act in time.
The IPCC says this opportunity for action will only last for the rest of this decade, as the final sentence in the new report underlines.

ie higher taxes and more government control.
OMG, the small window is closing fast!
I will believe it when John Kerry and Algore fly commercial, and live in normal sized houses.

Nothing like a good dose of fear porn with the morning coffee.
With rising sea levels at hand, it is unethical for various government agencies to issue building permits for beach front homes. Those government agencies should prohibit the sale of any land near any body of water.

I saw a presentation attributing human intelligence to the dramatic, periodic shifts in flora and fauna caused in Africa by the African plate periodically closing off the Mediterranean sea. Africa would shift from jungle to savanna and dessert over a short time about every thirty thousand years. So, climate change has been happening in far wider swings than now for the entire history of Earth. But now it’s our fault? Not buying it. So we need to destroy our lifestyle and live in the wet in the dark in case the climate might change? Sorry. No.
When Al Gore gives up his jet-set lifestyle and his sea side mansion, okay, I’ll worry. (Not much, maybe a little.)
I’m 78 and lived in Upstate NY all my life. Not a damn thing has changed. There is no event that has not occurred before.
Governments always want money; this is also a true statement.
Climate change studies and recocomendations are all attempts at governments getting more money; this is also a true stament.
Governments are competent to manage climate change; this is a false statement.
The only thing predictable about the climate is our inability to predict anything about it. Just last week in upstate NY they told me to expect a foot of snow, 10 inches minimum. I got 5 inches - that's a pretty large error, so no, I don't trust predictions going out 10-100 years.
Somehow, packing ourselves into cities, where we are even more reliant on modern technology is the answer? Somehow, more taxes and government control is the answer? Excuse me if I don't see how sending more money to DC for some {censored} politician to waste on a pet social project to buy re-election votes is going to "save" the climate.
I'm pretty sure the climate has been changing ever since the Earth has had a climate (several billion years now), and that it is going to go right on changing right up until the sun expands to a red giant, frying everything in a few billion years.
I can remember businesses shutting down for a winter storm...that never came. The city lost millions.
I can guarantee Brandon cites this “science” in his SOTU “reading” tonight as he explains that we cannot produce more energy and the answer is we need to lower consumption.
I don’t think he or Jen have an answer as to how I can lower consumption right now that I need to fill my LP tank so I can heat my home. Keeping the temp at 67 isn’t a solution.
I just filled up my car at $4.15/ gallon as the pundits keep saying gas might soon hit $4/gal? The extra few hundred a week was my dining out money, I’m sure Biden won’t suffer as all he does is have dinners made for him.
1,000 years of tree rings show drought is normal in California, far more normal than wet years. Droughts of 100-200 years are recorded in those rings.
Yet we are told the latest 10-year drought in California’s arid climate is “unprecedented in history” and “caused by man-made Global Warming.”
I don’t believe any of it. It’s about controlling the population.
Perfect.
Well played sir!
The ice in my glass melted yesterday. It must be true. /s
Coral Reefs are healthier than ever.
The report is based on a high point to low point to intentionally deceive.
And Obama sells his ocean front house.
